Representing Butler University in nineteen different NCAA Division intercollegiate Athletic programs, Butler Bulldogs is among the top most college athletic programs in the country. Almost all of the athletic teams at the University currently play in the Atlantic 10 Conference, but prior to 2011-12 season, all of the teams competed in the Horizon League. Butler Bulldogs' women's golf team represents the university in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, while its football team is the founding member of Pioneer League. Butler Bulldogs football program is among the most prestigious athletic programs at the university. Bulldogs' football team has had a long lustrous past in which it started off as the first ever intercollegiate football program in the state of Indiana. The history of the team dates all the way back to 1884, when the team played its first ever game on the 7^th Street Baseball Grounds. In its first ever on field encounter, the team went up against DePauw, and came out victorious after scoring a total of four goals to one. Over the years, the team has been able to make three playoff appearances, the latest one of which took place back in 1991 when the team lost to Pittsburgh State which later claimed national championship as well. From the period of 1934 to 1994, the Bulldogs football program enjoyed the most amount of success by claiming a total of thirty one championships as well as eleven league titles. Team won all of these league titles under the leadership of one of the greatest coaches in history of the program, Tony Hinkle. The team is currently coached by Jeff Voris, and it plays its home games at the Butler Bowl.

Butler Bulldogs men's basketball program is yet another crowned possession among university's array of athletic programs. The team currently competes as a member of Atlantic 10 Conference. Prior to that, the team used to compete in Horizon League, before that in Mid-American Conference and in Missouri Valley Conference even before that. Prior to the creation of NCAA tournament, Bulldogs claimed its very first national championship when it won AAU Championship in 1924. During the post NCAA era, the team made its first ever playoff appearance in 1958. The following year, the team also made it to the NIT Quarterfinals, making it its first ever post season win. Since then, the team has made one more appearance in the quarterfinals after having competed in the NIT tournament's post season seven times. In 1962, the team made it to the NCAA division I basketball tournament for the very first time and finished third in its regional standings.
