Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan is a famous Mexican folk ensemble that has been playing since 1898, and is one of Mexico's oldest musical bands that is now performing in its fifth generation. Today, the band  uses guitar, a guitarron, six violins, three trumpets, a vihuela and two harps. Mariachi is more than just music; it is an enriching tradition that features music but underneath all its melodious tunes, it is really about telling stories, history, legend and the culture that slowly develops around these things as whole. Mariachi Vargas was formed in the small city of Tecalitlan where it was founded by Don Gaspar Vargas to consist of a couple of violins, a wooden harp and a guitarra.  This combination of instruments became concrete as the 'Sonido Tecalitlan that stands distinguished from 'Sonido Cocula'. In the years that followed, instruments were added, changed and rearranged in the band, leading to the development of its characteristic traditional sound today. The group's history can be divided across its five generations of which the fourth and fifth proved most pivotal in terms of sound-development that led to its present-day music form.

Mariachi Vargas, currently comprises of thirteen members including violists Andres Gonzalez, Daniel Martinez, Jose Martinez, Jose 'Pepe' Martinez, Alberto Alfaro, and Manuel Alcaraz Vargas; trumpeters Fernando Valasquez, Gustavo Alvarado, and Federico Torres; guitarron player Enrique de Santiago; guitarist Arturo Vargass; harp-player Julio Martinez; and vihuela player Miguel Angel Barron.  Since 1950, the band has been artistically guided by Ruben Fuentes in addition to which it has been musically directed by Don Martinez since 1975.

The band's fourth generation, playing between 1994 and 2002, is considered by most mariachi lovers to be the most talented. In their studio offering La fiesta del Mariachi, the band has paid tribute to Jose Martinez who besides being a brilliant musical arranger and director of the group, was an inspiration to many in his capacity as a composer. The recordings of this generation on Polygram include En Concierto, El Mariachi Vargas, La fiesta del Mariachi, 50 Anniversay of Ruben Fuentes and Los sones Reyes. Feuntes's music and arrangements by the band are valued immensely since they are the initial five recordings released as a commemorative gesture of the Vargas' one-hundredth anniversary.

The band was featured on the Grammy Award-winning album Canciones de Mi Padre of 1987 by Linda Ronstadt. They made their first record in 1937 and released their most recent record in 2009, producing more than fifty recordings covering waltzes, polkas, Huastecos, popurris, cumbias and huapango, among other styles.
