The American punk-rock and country band Lucero - meaning "bright star" in Spanish - have been spreading their luminous melodies for well over a decade now. Having mostly worked with indie record labels for the first ten years of their existence, they got signed onto the mainstream entity of Universal Music Group a couple of years back and thus have garnered more commercial acclaim since then. Clinch some Lucero tickets to be pelted with their eclectic rock vibes and soak up their southern musical outpourings.
Coming together in 1998 in the birthplace of "The King," Elvis Presley himself, the members of Lucero, namely Ben Nichols, Roy Berry, John C. Stubblefield and Brian Venable saw themselves initially as an indie rock group. Consequently, they were signed onto the indie record label Madjack in 2001. However, they managed to make their sound heard prior to that by self-releasing their debut album The Attic Tapes. It was Lucero's self-titled album that was their first mainstream release and set the stage for more successful albums to follow.
Lucero's 2002 release Tennessee was much more commercially successful and was the band's last album with Madjack Records. The follow-up That Much Further West was released through Tiger Style Records in 2003 and was well-received by fans and critics alike, earning a listing on the prestigious "Hot List" as published by Rolling Stone. However, Lucero had to change labels again as Tiger Style announced that they were going out of business soon after. In 2004, the band formed their record label Liberty & Lament and then released Nobody's Darlings the following year. The album was recorded with acclaimed producer and musician Jim Dickinson and was heavily layered with Southern styled music. It peaked at the 47th and the 39th spots on the Top Heatseekers and the Top Independent Albums charts respectively. The same year also saw Lucero being featured in their very first documentary that was made by the filmmaker Aaron Goldman. Film footage from the time that the band spent in the studio during the recording sessions along with archival footage was typically used in making the documentary.
Lucero's label Liberty & Lament's sophomoric release Dreaming in America was also put out in 2005. In order to introduce their new fans to their original sound, Lucero re-released their independently released album The Attic Tapes in 2006 with additional rare tracks as an added bonus. Following the release of Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers in 2006, Lucero launched themselves on a related tour that fall that had Rocky Votolato as well as William Elliott Whitmore as opening acts. The album's chart success, borne out by attaining peak positions of 20 and 14 on the Top Independent Albums and Top Heatseekers charts respectively, was instrumental in propelling the band's barometer of success. Three years later saw frontman Nichols come out with a solo EP titled The Last Pale Light in the West that made a tuneful addition to the band's studio album release 1372 Overton Park. The record peaked at the second spot on the Top Heatseekers and became the band's highest charting work, even making inroads into mainstream music markets and making an appearance on Billboard 200.
This decade has seen Lucero garner even more widespread mainstream acclaim courtesy their 2011 record Mi Secreto De Amor and 2012 studio release Women & Work. The former became a top twenty record in Mexico and the latter entered the top-ten on the Top Independent Albums chart, peaking at the 44th spot on Billboard 200 as well. Their tours in both years took them all across the US, landing at popular destinations such as Coachella, Van's Warped Tour and the SXSW Music and Media Conference.
