'Wadaiko' literally means 'Japanese drum' while the name Yamato was thought of by Masa during an interview after the band's first performance, when they had not yet decided on a name and were asked to submit a name for the group. The Drummers actually started off for just a single performance at a Japanese festival where a performance composed by Masa was given. The composition and the choreography was a huge hit with the crowd and the group started receiving offers from all over the world to come and perform.

The Yamato Drummers are much different than other musical acts we see around the world today. A normal day for the group consists of getting up early in the morning and going on a 10KM run which is followed by a relentless workout. This exercise is required as they need to keep their bodies fit for the physically challenging and energy charged performances they are known for. The members then spend the entire afternoon practicing together and then each member practices alone till they go to bed.
