Based in Brandon, Florida, We the Kings is a pop American band. It was established in 2003 and has been around ever since. Apart from their pop music, they are known for their associated acts which they perform with bands like Boys Like Girls, Hey Monday, The Academy is..., All Time Low, Demi Lovato and Friday Night Boys. Some of the other genres they have worked on are power pop, pop punk and pop rock. The band is also actively involved in the product of their mini web base episodes entitled The King's Carriage. The band was founded by Travis Clark who is the lead vocalist, pianist and rhythm guitarist. Some of the other band members include Hunter Thomsen who is the lead guitarist and does the backing vocals. His brother Drew Thomsen is a bass guitarist and a backup singer. Danny Duncan handles the drums and the percussion instruments. All these band members have been a part of the band from the absolute beginning of the band. Ever since 2003, they have been in contract with S Curve Records.
The band released their debuted self titled album in October 2007. This album received mixed reviews and ranked at # 151 amongst other albums in the US. On Billboard's Top Heatseekers, the album ranked 3. Check Yes Juliet was a single from this album which features as the iTunes Singles of the Week in the following year. It also ended up being the # 84 hit in the US Pop 100 list for 2007. Secret Valentine was another single from the album which ended up being the no. 71 US Pop 100 of 2008 and landed at no 40 in the US Pop Songs.
Smile Kid was their second album which was received in 2009. The title of the album comes from the album single 'The Story of Your Life'. 'Heaven Can Wait' was the first single of the album which made it into the Billboard Heatseekers Songs chart. In Pop Songs chart, it landed at no. 32. Demi Lovato, a famous singer and actress collaborated with the band and was featured in a song 'We'll Be a Dream' which was also included in this album. This album was available for streaming download on online communities and groups like MySpace. The album got mixed reviews. Evan Lucy of the Alternative Press wrote that this album had expanded the sound of the band which was previously not so wide.
Other than their albums, the band has worked really hard on their exposure. They have had numerous public appearances which brought them into limelight for a period of time. They have been featured in some very well known television events and also have been guests on radio shows. In 2003, they were guests on The Early Show which airs on CBS television where they performed 'Check Yes Juliet'. In the same year, MTV featured them in their Spring Break '08 program. This was a studded year for the band for they had the honor of performing on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show in the very same year. The Friday Night Premiere on MTV was when we saw the band once again so they were pretty much all over the place in 2008.
Their music has been inspired by Bob Marley and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The band has acknowledged that fact on various occasions. Their style of music has earned them the honorable title of being the modern version of Jimmy Eat World with whom they had performed in The Middle at various live performances. Other than that, the band is primarily busy touring with other bands like All Time Low, Boys Like Girls and the Audition. In 2007, the toured with the Tourzilla bands and in 2008, they did a tour to support Cobra Starship. On this tour, they were accompanied by Metro Station and The Cab. They had a very busy year in 2008 when they were on the Warped tour, where they performed live for all their show.
