Comprising of Billy Harper, David Weiss, Eddie Henderson, Cecil McBee, Billy Hart, George Cables and Craig Handy, The Cookers have been touring for over five years and enthralling audiences everywhere. All of them being jazz-masters, their group has been hailed by Los Angeles Times as "Rich with a mix of classic elegance and exploration, the group might reference the past by name, but it never sounds less than current". Over the course of their career, the band members have given jazz fans several reasons to believe in them because of their catchy numbers. If you have been yearning to see this band perform live in your town, the chance is finally here. Get The Cookers tickets and hear some of their best tunes live.
With each jazzman of the band having already proved himself as an integral part of some great band of the past, every member's talent is commendable. The band has released three studio albums so far; "Cast of the First Stone", "Warriors" and "Believe", first two released in 2010 and third released in 2012.
The Cookers hit the music scene with their first album, "Warriors" which immediately became a huge success. The band instantly gained a lot of popularity. Their album was introduced to the market with a sizzling remake of Freddie Hubbard's, The Core, which was a moving tune that forced the listeners to move on to the other songs as well. Another hit from this album was, Spookarella which was a humorous and playful solo by the famous Craig Handy. Other singles from this album, Sweet Rita Suite, Priestless, Carpa Black and Close To You Alone were also lauded by the audience.
The Cookers initial success encouraged them to release their sophomore album, "Cast the First Stone" the same year. A slightly relaxed record, this work was much more focused as compared to the band's debut release. A fusion of emotional ballads and hard-grooving numbers, the record contained a perfect mix of swing and blues, which was loved by their fans. Some of the best songs from this album include, Peacemaker, Looking for the Light, The Seventh Day, Croquet Ballet, The Chief and Think On Me.
After receiving critical acclaim for their first two works, The Cookers decided to entirely write their own music in the album, "Believe". Produced with the Motema Music Records, this album highlighted a different aspect of the bands' music, which was appreciated by their countless fans. Some of the best tracks from this album include, Believe, For Its True, Temptations, Ebony Moonbeams and Naaj. The final track of the album, Free for All also received critical acclaim.
Perhaps what sets The Cookers apart from other contemporaries is the fact that their music contains a mixture of traditional and modern tunes, which never fail to make the listeners wonder what they've been missing out on all along. What is commendable is that each band member steps into the limelight with a unique subtlety and style which is always great to hear. The Cookers are known for their energetic live performances. You would think that age would have dulled these jazz superstars, but you could not be more wrong; their live performances are as lively as ever. That is one of the reasons why these legendary artists are almost always on the road.
Some of the places the band members are scheduled to perform during their upcoming tour are, Denver, Albuqurque, San Jose, Seattle, Santa Cruz and Oakland. As always, the band is likely to rock the audience, so if you want to be a part of their live performance and hear their soulful tunes live, get your hands on The Cookers tickets.
