Born in a family that had a pretty mix of music and religion, Steve was always interested in this field. While his father was a preacher and a leader of a gospel band, his mother was a wonderful piano player, singer and songwriter.

Steve Bell got his start in a family gospel band which toured to many places and churches within their community. After finishing high school and making insignificant appearances, he joined the acclaimed Elias, Schritt and Bell.

Steve played with the secular folk trio of Elias, Schritt and Bell along with Tim Elias and John Schritt. The group released one commercial studio album in 1982 titled Awakening. Steve quit the band after playing for about ten years. Indeed, he totally withdrew from performing in 1988.

This time was not easy for him as financial crisis led him to be home-ridden for years. However, this was the golden period for him as he developed the penchant of song writing while staying in home with his wife and children. It was during this period that he became a Christian recording artist and wrote most of the material for his first four solo projects.
