At the age of eight, Nas dropped out of school and joined the band Devastatin' Seven, whose influence can also be seen in his official debut album that came out in 1994. During this time, Nas also got involved into the street culture that went on to inspire his rhymes and lyrics later. His rhetoric skills and street-glamorous metaphors soon gained attention when Nas entered the music world in 1991. He made his first appearance on Main Source's single, Live at the Barbeque. Nas soon landed a recording contract and released his own debut album, titled "Illmatic", in 1994. It opened to critical and commercial acclaim and spawned several smashing hits including The World Is Yours, One Love and It Ain't Hard to Tell. Illmatic is still counted among the greatest hip hop albums of all times.
His sophomore album came out in 1996, titled "It Was Written" and peaked at number one on Billboard 200. This album saw Nas in a completely different light as compared to his debut album. Unlike the straightforward hip-hop approach of Illmatic, this second album focused more on the pop-crossover genre. The singles, If I Ruled the World and Street Dreams, further widened his fan base and portrayed the artist as a versatile musician with the courage to experiment with new music styles.
Nas released his third album in 1999, titled "I Am", which also debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. This album was intended to be an autobiographical record of the star and included songs like, Hate Me Now and Nas is Like, which both made it to the Billboard Hot 100. The same year, Nas released another album, titled "Nastradamus". The album went platinum and produced two hit singles, You Owe Me and Nastradamus.
In the late 90s, Nas also reigned at the top of the New York rap scene and gave tough competition to many of his contemporaries, including the renowned rapper Jay-Z. His endless stream of hits was complimented by his collaborations with the biggest producers in the industry including Timbaland, Puff Daddy and the Trackmasters. Nas also displayed his acting talents in Hype Williams' film, "Belly" in 1998 and also contributed to the soundtrack of the film.
The feud with the long time rival Jay-Z also took strength by the turn of the decade when he called out to Nas in his renowned single, Takeover. Nas strikingly responded with the album, titled "Stillmatic" in 2001 and opened it with the single Ether, which was a direct response to Jay-Z. Amidst this row, Nas comfortably reinforced his status in the rap world with this album and received critical acclaim and commercial success.
In 2004, Nas gave off another platinum hit, "Street's Disciple". Preceded by the hit singles, You Know My Style and Bridging the Gap, this record marked another milestone in the rapper's career. Keeping up with his unpredictability, Nas showed up at Jay-Z's highly publicized 'I Declare War' concert in 2005 and the two performed Jay-Z's song, Dead Presidents, together.
His latest album "Life is Good" came out in 2012 and debuted at the top of the Billboard 200. Nas announced in 2013, that his twelfth studio album will be released in 2014 and currently it is one of the most awaited releases of the year.
