During its 40 or more years, heavy metal has always retained its popularity in the music industry as a dominant genre as well as a wide and loyal fan base. The concerts are always full of energy and even chaos with crowds pumped up to the maximum.
Tracing back its history, Heavy metal started developing in the early 70s in the US as compared to in Britain where it was already established. There, a faction of British bands pioneered the genre in the late 60s. During that time and going till early 70s, these bands included Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and a couple of more heavy metal pioneers. Coming back to the States, Heavy Metal was emerging with a more theatrical style. Artists like Kiss and Alice Cooper merged pyrotechnics and heavy makeup with hard driving music resulting in frenzied crowds. Meanwhile, the metal scene on the west Coast took off in L.A. it happened after a band called Van Halen (Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, David Lee Roth and Michael Anthony) that used to play in clubs got signed on with Warner Brothers and released its debut album in 1978. That band also generated a generation of imitators. The wave of heavy metal also spread across the Pacific in the 70s. In Australia, a band called, AC/DC formed had formed which after some success within the country soon broke through in 1980. Their worldwide fame came after the release of its album, Back in Black which sold more than 15 million copies and is considered one of the most successful metal albums of all time.
After a brief decline the genre was reenergized and revived by the New Wave of British Metal with bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Saxon, Motorhead, and a few others who increased the rhythm and made the music harder. In USA, Metallica paved the way for many hardcore and thrash metal artists like Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax and Pantera. The 90s however, saw heavy metal pushed into obscurity by grunge bands which topped the charts. But all through this time Heavy metal fans have remained fiercely loyal, buying the music and eagerly going to the concerts.
Since the late 90s, heavy metal seems to have made a comeback! Now a new and heavier breed of bands have emerged giving birth to a number of new rock and metal genres throughout the world. Older metal bands are also reforming and touring. Fans are happy to see lot of concerts, touring festivals going on. One such festival in the USA is known as Rockstar Energy Mayhem festival. It is relatively a new touring show which features a few new comers, some familiar names and a couple of established top acts every year in summers.
