At the age of fifteen, she released the video for No L.O.V.E which debuted on 106 & Park. Her debut album titled "My Name Is Jhene Aiko" was all set to be released the same year but didn't come out because of some label issues.

In 2003, she left to continue her education and returned to music in 2007. She released her first album, a mixtape, titled "Sailing Soul (s)" in March 2011. It features collaborations with Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Miguel, Drake and other artists. The album received positive reviews and sold 100,000 albums.

 In 2012, she opened for Life is Good/Black Rage, a highly anticipated tour which was headlined by Lauryn Hill and Nass. She also featured on Beware by Big Sean. This was her first song to enter Top 40 in the US and later got charted on the US Billboard Hot 100. She is also a contributor for Drake's "Nothing Was the Same." The songs for which she lent her voice are From Time and Wu-Tang Forever.

Aiko signed a deal with Def Jam and released her debut EP titled "Sail Out" in November 2013. The album's lead single was 3: 16 am which came out in 2012 for iTunes Store. Second single from the album was Bed Peace which featured Childish Gambino. The single "The Worst" from the album topped the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop, making Aiko first female to top the chart with debut single. The song charted at number eleven on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. Overall, this was a successful album which charted at number eight on the US Billboard 200 and sold over 46,000 copies by the second week of its release.

Currently, she is working on her first studio debut titled "Souled Out". The album's lead single To Love & Die came out in June 2014. The song was met with positive reviews and entered the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart at number 46. Second single from the album was The Pressure which became available on iTunes a day after the release of first single.
