City And Colour
The best music for me is sad music. The reason is that most people turn to music is to sort of make them happy. I love music to sort of escape to. And when you hear music that?s sort of sad you can identify with it and it lets you know that you?re not the only one who?s feeling bad. A lot of those songs are written on some of the experience I?ve been through and stuff and that?s just how I deal with it. I just write songs when I?m bummed out and I feel happier.? Green remarked about his influences for creating the songs.
City and Colour is an acoustic side-project fronted by Dallas Green, who is most famous for being a member of the Platinum-selling band Alexisonfire. It originated when Alexisonfire won a 2005 Juno Award for New Group of the Year -- released a limited edition EP of songs performed on solo acoustic guitar. Wildly circulated on the Internet, the release caused such an overwhelming underground buzz that fans far away from Europe and Australia emailed Alexisonfire site about the song copies.
The name City and Colour comes from his own name: Dallas, which is a city, and Green, a color. It always made me feel uneasy whenever I thought about putting the album out under the name Dallas Green. This is the only reasoning he had for the title. With a poignant vocal styling and lyrics that speak of impulse and introspection, Green affects his audience by offering his own personal testimony.
Green's melodically driven musical lyricism has earned City and Colour Juno 2007 nominations for Alternative Album of The Year and Jack Richardson Producer of the Year for Save Your Scissors. City and Colour had Nominations in 2006 Much Music Video Awards for Best Pop Video, Best Independent Video and Peoples? Choice Award for Favourite Canadian Artist categories. There he won Peoples' Choice Award for Favourite Canadian Artist. Similarly in Chart Magazine he was declared as 2006 artist of the year while in 2007 Juno Awards he was nominated for the category of Alternative Album of the Year (for Sometimes) and won the prize as well.
Green?s full-length album entitled Sometimes under his solo City and Colour banner in November 2005. A culmination of music that Green has been writing for over a decade, the album achieved Platinum certification in 2006, surpassing any expectations he had. It had a good reception, described by one reviewer as dynamically gentle and vulnerable. Critically acclaimed solo performances, a special appearance at Burton Cumming's Songwriter's Circle during the 2005 Junos and a performance at the 2006 Much Music Video Awards, where Green won PEOPLE'S CHOICE FAVOURITE CANADIAN ARTIST were just icing on the cake.
City and Colour's latest creation entitled City and Colour Live brings fans to experience some of the most memorable moments from sold out tours across the nation. From Vancouver to Halifax, City and Colour Live features 13 heart-wrenching live tracks captured on both CD and DVD with 7 bonus tracks combined, a special acoustic performance of Alexisonfire's Happiness by the Kilowatt, and a limited edition release contained a USB drive featuring highlight footage.
Ralph Serravalle, a former religion teacher of Green's, played a large part in teaching to believe in himself as a musician. The song Missing was written about him although later he died of cancer. One track CDs of this song were sold at his early shows and all proceeds went to the Denis Morris High School Starvathon that Serravalle started, and continuously supported.
