The league had to encounter financial issues during the first few years but it came out of it and football began witness tremendous growth. By the mid 1900's the NFL had joined the ranks of the most watched leagues in the country. The American League was formed in 1960 and posed a serious threat to the NFL. The league competed on almost every front but the NFL finally triumphed and the AL merged into it.

NFL now has two conferences the American Football Conference and the National Football Conference. Each of these two conferences contains four divisions South, East, West and North. The teams with best records are crowned division champions who are then joined by two wild card entrants in the playoffs. The teams that come out on top in both conferences are crowned conference champions and they go on to headline the "Super Bowl," one of the most watched sporting events in the world.
