With its inception in 1959, for its initial four years, the game was hosted at the John F. Kennedy Stadium in which was formerly known as the Philadelphia's Municipal stadium. Although the first game was financially well received, it went on to becoming widely unpopular for the rest of its years at the JFK Stadium. Due to this and other numerous setbacks, the game was snowed under by poor attendance.

In 1964, Dudley moved the annual game from Philadelphia to the Atlantic City's indoor facility, Convention Hall as part of a deal with Atlantic City's businessmen who agreed to pay him $25000 for the move. Here the Liberty Bowl became the first bowl game in the history of College Football to have been played indoors. But to no avail, even though this marked as a great achievement for the game, AstroTurf was still in its development stages and due to some major technical difficulties with the facility, the game barely made profits. Over the years the Autozone Liberty Bowl has faced many obstacles in its route to success which required massive investments and generated relatively negligible returns.

Keeping in view all the necessary constraints, in 1965 Dudley moved the bowl to Memphis with a vision to serve larger crowds. This became its final home as the venue formerly known as the Memphis Memorial Stadium was renamed as the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Both the Liberty Bowl and the stadium have concurrently been an essential part of the City of Memphis, in turn awarding reasonable returns to its citizens for the capital initially invested. The collaboration of more than four decades is exceedingly popular for its raw football experience.

The Autozone Liberty Bowl established itself among the oldest non-championship series football games. The game has given exclusive television rights to ESPN, with additional broadcasting rights to ESPN Radio and ESPN International.
