Cole Porter is one of the greatest composers of his generation. He has produced scores for multiple films and Broadway shows. The stage veteran Harry Connick, Jr. has now introduced a new musical based on Porter to celebrate his life and music.
Cole Porter: A Musical Genius
Born in Indiana to a wealthy family, Cole Porter began to take interest in music during his early years thanks to his mother who helped in his musical training. He learned the violin at the age of six and later got skilful at playing the piano before Porter penned his first operetta at the age of ten. In 1905, he was enrolled in Worcester Academy and became class valedictorian. He then attended Yale College where his musical talents were uncovered, leading him to be elected as the president of the Yale Glee Club.
Cole Porter soon began to compose musical comedy scores for The Yale Dramatic Association which helped him prepare for a career as a Hollywood and Broadway composer and lyricist. After his graduation from Yale, he entered Harvard Law School in 1913 but felt that he is not meant to be a lawyer and later switched to Harvard's music department and started to study counterpoint and harmony with Pierto Yon. In 1915, Porter wrote a song, Esmeralda which became his first track to appear on a Broadway revue, 'Hands Up.'
Achieving Success on Broadway and West End
During the late '1920s, Cole Porter became a force to be reckoned in the Broadway and West End world. He introduced musicals like, 'Paris' and 'La Revue' both of which became great hits. In addition, he went on to compose and write memorable numbers including, Let's Do It, Let's Misbehave and You Do Something to Me. He also composed music for different Hollywood films including, 'Born to Dance,' 'Rosalie,' 'Stage Fright' and 'High Society.' Due to his contributions, Porter has been inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame and Great American Songbook Hall of Fame.
Harry Connick, Jr: A Superstar Entertainer
Harry Connick, Jr is not only a famous singer and composer but is also an accomplished actor and television host. During his career as an artist, he has recorded 26 studio albums out of which 11 of them became chart-topping hits. He has gone on to sell in excess of 28 million records around the world and has also starred in different flicks including, 'New In Town,' 'Dolphin Tale' and 'Angels Sing.' Moreover, he has also performed 'The Star Spangled Banner' during the Super Bowl XXVI Halftime show in 1992.
Introducing A Celebration of Cole Porter
Harry Connick, Jr has made his return to the theatre and introduced his latest work, 'A Celebration of Cole Porter.' This musical will contain music and lyrics by Cole Porter whereas additional songs and orchestration will be performed by Harry Connick, Jr. who is also the director of this show. The spectacle will star Luke Hawkins and Aaron Burr. It will be performed without any intermission. As of now, the musical is taking place at the Nederland Theatre.
