Pittsburgh Steelers is a professional football team from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They belong to National Football League (NFL) under American Football Conference (AFC) and are the most exultant and oldest franchise of AFC. Initially named Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers joined NFL in 1933 when the owner Art Rooney, Sr. paid the franchise fee of $2,500 to the league. Before that there were strict blue laws that stated that no games can be held on Sundays, when majority of NFL games were scheduled.
After the city's famous steel industry, Pittsburgh Pirates were named Pittsburgh "Steelers" in 1940. The Steelers lost 23-2 against New York Giants when they made it to the field for the very first time. Throughout the 30's Pittsburgh Steelers never made it any way above second position in their division. Their highest percentage came in 1936 with .500.In 1938, Steelers signed what was at that time the biggest contract in NFL's history, by signing Byron White, the future justice of Supreme Court. However, he only played a year with Steelers and then signed with Detroit Lions.
Pittsburgh Steelers ran seriously short of players during World War II. They merged twice with different teams in order to form a team. They merged with Philadelphia Eagles during 1943 season, forming "Phill-Pitt Eagles", also known as the "Steagles". Steagles went 5-4-1. During 1944, they merged with Chicago Cardinals and were named as Card-Pit. Team went 0-10. The Steelers got into the playoffs for the very first time in 1947 and tied for the division's first place with Philadelphia Eagles. The tie-breaking game of playoff between the two teams was held at Forbes Field, which the Steelers lost by 21-0. They didn't make it to the playoffs for another two and a half decades. They did qualify for "Playoff Bowl" during 1963, being the second best team within their conference. It is however not considered as official playoff.
Chuck Noll was hired as the team coach later that year. Noll selected various Hall of Famers for the team, including; Terry Bradshaw, Joe Greene, Franco Harris, Mel Blount and Jack Ham and finally succeeded in introducing four future Hall of Fame players in the team. They were; Lynn Swann, Mike Webster, Jack Lambert, and John Stallworth. That very era is known to have been the best ever in NFL history. No other team had ever hired four Hall of Famers in a single year. Pittsburgh Steelers is known as the best dynasty in NFL history, they made various records, among which were; being the only NFL team to win 4 Super Bowl championships within 6 years, also the only NFL team to win more than two. They also made it to eight playoffs.
During 80's, especially mid 80's, Pittsburgh Steelers suffered continuous blows. All of their key players, including Joe Greene, Jack Ham, Lynn Swann, Terry Bradshaw, Jack Lambert and Mel Blount retired in a queue during the coming years. There were some major injuries throughout the 1980 season and the Steelers missed the playoff games again with 9 - 7 record.
Some of the major losses since 1971 were experienced by the Pittsburgh Steelers after these retirements. In the years 1985, 86, and 88, the Steelers did not score above .500. In 1987, they ended with a record that announced 8-7 but still missed the playoffs. During 1989 they had a chance of making it through playoffs with Rod Woodson and Merrill Hoge on team, but narrowly missed it in each of the next two seasons.
Chuck Noll retired in 1992 and the new coach Bill Cowher, a native of Crafton, Pittsburgh, was hired. Cowher successfully managed to lead the Steelers into the playoffs in the next six consecutive seasons. In history, such success was only once accomplished before by the legendary Paul Brown of Cleveland Browns.
