The man behind the formation of the band is none other than Joe Lewis. It is said that he was working at a pawn shop when he first came across a guitar. The rest as they say is history. A self-taught musician, he played at local clubs and bars, participating in various music festivals all over the state along with his band members. Their first big break came when they opened up for the legendary Little Richard at the Forty Acres Fest, a University of Texas’ annual music festival. It was actually Ernst, who at the time was working for the University’s Music and Entertainment Committee, who had booked them for the event. This would prove to be the watershed moment for the band, as they later opened for bands like Okkervil River and Spoon, while touring with them.
It would take Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears a few more appearances at festivals like the Austin City Limits Music Festival and Lollapalooza, before releasing their first self-titled extended play in 2009. “Master Sold My Baby”, “Cousin Randy”, “Bitch, I Love You”, and “Gunpowder”, were all from this EP, which was immediately noticed for its quality and composition both by the critics and the fans. Various music critics rated it with 4/5 stars. It was a commercially successful venture, too, for the band.
It wouldn’t take the band too long and during the same year they released their debut studio album, ‘Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is!’Allmusic reviewed the album as the epitome of 1960’s R&B music; pure to the roots. “This is so authentic that if slipped into a mix of likeminded ‘60s R&B, only a handful would peg it as a 2009 released as opposed to one from four decades earlier.” The album contained super-hits like “Bobby Booshay”, “Boogie”, “I’m Broke”, “Sugarfoot”, amongst others.
Scandalous has been the band’s most recent album which was released in 2011. With chart-busting numbers like “Jesus Took My Hand”, “Ballad of Jimmy Tanks”, “Mustang Ranch”, “She’s so Scandalous”, “Booty City”, and others, the album has been described as the band’s best stuff yet. The album has heavy shades of retro-rock, blues, modern electric, retro-soul, and soul music. The music is just perfect to match any kind of mood, be it, playful, passionate, confident, reckless, party, and/or aggressive.
