Details of Ash and the Ticket Luck value
Ash
Formed in 1991, Ash are an alternative rock band based in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland. The band is since enjoying a devoted following. The media originally pegged Ash's music as Britpop when they first found mainstream success.
The group originally comprised vocalist and guitarist Tim Wheeler, bass guitarist Mark Hamilton and drummer James Heatley. Q magazine named Ash as number 2 of its '50 Bands To See Before You Die'.
Initially inspired by Twisted Sister and Iron Maiden, Wheeler and Hamilton formed a heavy metal band called Vietnam. After two gigs, the duo was left stranded when their bandmates left. Requiring a drummer, they recruited Rick McMurray who was a year ahead of them in school.
With McMurray on board, they set out to develop a style of music inspired by grunge bands like Nirvana, Mudhoney and Pixies. 1996 saw them release the singles 'Goldfinger' and 'Oh Yeah'. The tracks saw considerable success.
Their track 'Lose control' was featured in the video game Gran Turismo. In 1997, Ash released Live at the Wireless, a live album. They recorded the album at the Triple J Studios in Australia.
During their time touring with Weezer, the group recruited Charlotte Hatherley who had previously been with the band Nightnurse.
Hatherley made her gig debut at a few small gigs a week before appearing at the V Festival in 1997. In October 1998, Ash released their second album 'Proper, Nu-Clear Sounds'.
Following the commercial failure of Nu-Clear Sounds, Tim Wheeler disappeared for a short while. Ash nearly became bankrupt as they eventually managed to release possibly their last album. Luckily, the album turned out to be a hit, gaining commercial success and expanding fan base.
The band retreated to Wheeler's parents' house for their rehearsals. The single 'Shining Light' released in January 2001 was followed by the number one album Free All Angels the same year.
Free All Angels spawned singles like Burn Baby Burn, Sometimes, Candy, and There's a Star. The single 'Shining Light' earned the band the 'Best Contemporary Song' award at the 2002 Ivor Novello awards.
Ash released a new single, 'Envy'. Following shortly afterwards was the singles collection Intergalactic Sonic 7's with the bonus disk entitled Cosmic Debris.
In 2004, Ash released Meltdown which reached number five in the UK. 'Clones', taken from the album, was the first licensed music to be used in anything Star Wars-related. Since the band teamed up with Lucasarts for a new Star Wars game, entitled Republic Commando, they produced music for them.
Meltdown and Orpheus were featured on the popular British movie, entitled Shaun of the Dead. These tracks also appeared on the in-game soundtracks for the video games NHL 2005 and Burnout 3: Takedown.
During the recording of their album Meltdown, Charlotte Hatherley also wrote and recorded her solo side project album Grey Will Fade. Gray Will Fade spawned a hit single 'Bastardo'.
Also featured was the group's cover of the Buzzcocks song Everybody's Happy Nowadays. The single featured Chris Martin on backing vocals.
