Alash is a three-member band that comprises of professionals who are experts in throat singing. Hailing from a small town in Central Asia called Tuva, the ensemble had been training in traditional Tuvan music since their childhood. At the time when the group started off in 1999, they went by the name ‘Changy-Xaya’. Having practiced in streets and college basement, they soon became known as a local traditional band on campus. During this time, the band members which include Bady-Dorzhu Ondar, Ayan Shirizhikcame and Ayan-ool Sam, also got interested in western music and learned to play hybrid Tuvan-instruments of Europe. They listened to some new American groups and took inspiration from their musical styles. The group’s achievements include winning a trophy in Tuva's International Xoomei Symposium contest in 2004 for standing first. Three of the Alash musicians took individual prizes for throat singing in 2008. All the members of Alash play in the Tuvan National Orchestra and have won grand and first prize in the Ensemble Competition and All-Russia National Orchestra. Alash features remarkable techniques for singing various pitches at a time. The ensemble is deeply committed to the customary Tuvan culture and music.
