Grammy Award winning "The Empress of Soul" Gladys Maria Knight was born on May 28, 1944. Apart from being an R&B sensation, Knight is also a humanitarian, author and an actress. Gladys Knight was born in Loachapoka, Alabama, to Merald Woodlow Knight and Sarah Elizabeth Woods.
In 1951, when she was just 7 years old, she took her initial step to fame after she won Ted Mack"s Original Amateur Hour TV Show Contest.
Gladys Knight started earning even more fame when she started performing in musical group called The Pips, along with her other siblings, Merald and Brenda and two of her cousins Elenor and William. Years later, group"s popularity started to rise and The Pips was seen touring.
Knight got married soon after she found out about her preganancy in 1960, and made her come back to The Pips after having a miscarriage. Groups #1 smash hit "Every Beat of My Heart", peaked at #1 spot on R&B Chart and was produced by Bobby Robinson and released on Vee-Jay Records.
The group narrowed down to be a quartet after the departure of Langston George in 1962, after which the group renamed itself to Gladys Knight and The Pips.
The same year she found out that she was pregnant again and later gave birth to a son Jimmy III, also in 1962 group was able to score another blockbuster hit "Letter Full of Tears".
In order to give most of her time to her son, she parted ways from the group as well, and the following year she gave birth to baby daughter, Kenya.
In order to financially support her family, Gladys Knight made her come back to the group, and scored a record deal with Motown Records in 1966 and gave out several successful singles including "Friendship Train", "I Heard it Through the Grapevine", "I Don"t Want To Do Wrong", and "Neither One of Us (Wants to be The First One To Say Goodbye)". The latter one also fetched them a Grammy Award win.
After concluding their tenure with Motown Records, Gladys Knight and The Pips was then signed by Buddah Records in 1973.
The very same year, the group earned its full fledged stardom as they released their No. 1 smash hit "Midnight Train to Georgia" that peaked at #1 spot of both the R&B and pop Chart, and in addition to that, group also won their second Grammy Award for the song.
After achieving enough fame in music industry, Gladys Knight turned her attention towards acting and made her debut as an actress in feature film titled "Pipe Dreams". Knight won a Golden Globe Award for Best New Actress, but film it self didn"t make much commercial success.
Knight made her solo debut after, due to legal difficulties; group was not allowed to perform together anymore. She released her debut solo LP "Miss Gladys Knight" in 1978 on Buddah Records, which was followed by her second solo released the following year titled "Gladys Knight" that was released on Columbia Records.
