The Musical Box is a tribute band belonging from Canada. The group faithfully performs and reconstructs live the concerts of the band Genesis, who had a short career from the year 1972 to 1976. They are the only band in the whole world who managed to receive an official license from Peter Gabriel and Genesis to perform their songs. The band took their name from one of the songs of Genesis which was titled The Musical Box. It was released in the year 1971 and is known to be among some of the most famous tracks of the group.
The Musical Box started their career in the music industry in the year 1993 in Quebec, Canada as a tribute band. The initial band consisted of seven members. They also incorporated costumes and visual effects which were featured in the actual performances of Genesis the band in the 70s. They recruited Denis Gagne in the group in the year 1995, who became their latest lead singer. This was when they began to give importance to portraying themselves as an accurate tribute band and started putting more emphasis on costumes, lights and the in-song banter which the band Genesis was so famous for.
Gagne is known to have adopted the character of Peter Gabriel in a very convincing way. He learned to play the flute and shaved the front part of his hair in order to resemble Peter Gabriel more convincingly. The Musical Box bought the rights of The Lamb Lies Down from Genesis and Peter Gabriel in the year 2000 in order to recreate it on Broadway. Genesis gave them copies of the twelve hundred original slides in order to help them with their production. Moreover, they managed to get complete access to the actual master tapes of the record. This helped them reconstruct the sound more expertly on stage.
This caused a bit of a controversy among the hard core fans of Genesis as The Musical Box managed to exactly reconstruct the original sound of the band in a live environment. However, the popularity of the group has grown ever since the year 2001 and they have been performing at sold out shows all over the world including South America, Europe, the United States and Canada. In July of the year 2007, they went on another world tour. They performed in countless European countries as well as eastern and Midwestern cities in the United States.
In the year 2010, the movie Soupernatural featured Denis Gagne. In addition to that, he also sang a song for the soundtrack of the film. The same year, the band took a break from music. However, a year later they got back into action and went on another tour. In the year 2011, they went on an extensive tour of the United States and Canada. They continue to produce brilliant performances based on the music of Genesis. Their shows are filled with energy and excitement as they are known to give outstanding concerts.
