University of Oklahoma is represented for a variety of sports by 19 varsity teams known as Oklahoma Sooners. The sports activities are not confined to men only but include games for women as well. They are part of the Big 12 Conference and are associated with the South Division of NCAA. Each year the teams become a part of a thrilling sports season and earn the university recognition for different sports ranging from basketball, baseball and football to gymnastics and rowing.

The name 'Sooners' finds its history from the nickname of the individuals who entered the Oklahoma Indian Territory early and marked a beginning for the non native settlement to claim the homesteads of choice before anyone else could do it. Talking about the origins of the name and the team, let's shed light on the University and its affiliations for sports. During the process of its formulation, University of Oklahoma was a member of Southwest Athletic Conference. After five years, it left and joined another association named Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association. It maintained the membership until the association got split. Later the University joined another conference which underwent several name changes dependent upon its number of members. Today with 12 members it is known as the Big 12 Conference.

Among the sports played by Oklahoma Sooners, it has earned fame for college football since the early twenties. For the game alone, the team has won 40 Conference titles and seven Associated Press National Championships. Apart from this, the Sooners ranks at the second position for earning the most points in Division I-A football history despite playing approximately 60 few games in comparison to the other well known schools for the game. It has the record of having the greatest winning proportion since the start of AP poll in mid thirties.

The fame of the team is not limited to just college sports; it has appeared in several national championships of football with the recent one in 2000. Since its fame spawns for a variety of games, football is not just it. The game of basketball for men got much attention since the early eighties in the tenure of Billy Tubbs as coach. The team currently plays at the House of Alvan Adams. Although it has never managed to win a basketball championship but still is positioned on as second for the most number of tournament wins.

Coming on to gymnastics, Oklahoma Sooners has excelled in the sport in both college tournaments as well as in national championships with the recent ones in 2005 and 2006. Under the training of the exceptionally talented coach Mark Williams, it has won four of the past five NCAA championships contended.

The tradition of baseball for the Oklahoma Sooners is highlighted with major wins of two National Championships and a number of All-Americans. The team plays its home games from Dale Mitchell Baseball Park. Since inception it has been trained by the best coaches. Currently Sunny Goloway has the honor of doing the job.

At present the athletics department at the university is managed by Joe Castiglione and is ranked at 3rd position for being the Best College Sports Program in America by the Sports Illustrated.

The sports season of 2005-2006 was memorable for Oklahoma Sooners. They defeated the University of Houston, Wichita State University and Texas Christian University in the regional games.
