This particular band which is commonly referred to as a 'project' rather than a band was formed in 1998 by the Alternative rock band Blur's member, Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett who is a British cartoonist and also the co-creator of the Tank Girl comic book. This not-so-ordinary project comprises of music composed by the Gorillaz with an added feature of a widespread universe which is fictional and is depicted through a virtual band which is comprised by characters from a comic book. There are four composed animated members of the band: 2D, key board and lead vocalist, Noodle who plays the guitar and occasionally lends his vocals, Murdoc Niccals, who is a bass guitarist and Russel Hobbs who plays the drums and is on percussion. They have a unique style of composing several musical genres. The genres that this band music is comprised of are electronic, hip hop, alternative rock and dub.

This virtual band's debut album Gorillaz in the year 2001, ended up in selling more than seven million copies. This record breaking sell-out of their album landed them a place in the Guinness Book of World records as one of the most triumphant virtual bands. In 2001, the band was also nominated for the Mercury Prize, which was later cancelled at the request of the band. In 2005, the Gorillaz second studio album was released, namely Demon Days. The album featured some hit singles by the band such as Feel Good Inc, El Manana, Dirty Harry, Kids with Guns and Dare. The album, Demon Days, was such a hit that it went double platinum in the United Stated and five times platinum in the United Kingdom. In 2006, the band also received five nominations for the Grammy Awards and won in the Best Pop Collaborations with Vocals category. The overall gross sales of the band's two albums, Gorillaz and Demon Days crossed more than 20 million sales of their albums by the year of 2007. The band recorded another studio album, Plastic Beach, which was released in 2010.

In the TV mockumentary of Charts of Darkness, it was unequivocally stated that Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn were the real members behind the Gorillaz project. Their first album featured the voice of Miho Hatori as Noodle; Phil Cornwell gives the band the voice of Murdoc. The music videos of the band/project have all been created by Passion Pictures, with the exclusion of Tomorrow Comes Today and Rock It. The present line up of the band consists half of The Clash (Paul Simonon and Mick Jones).

As for the bands live performances, between the 1st of November and 5th November in 2005, theref was a Gorillaz fiesta at the Manchester Opera House. The EMI film team filmed the occasion for a DVD release by the name of Demon Days Live. It was later revealed that an American adaption of the event would take place in 2006 at the famous Apollo Theater in Harlem. The band opened the show for the 2006 Grammy Awards, and shared the stage with a virtual Madonna. The performance of the band was a blended compositional act of their song Feel Good Inc and Hung Up of Madonna. A week after the band also gave a live stage performance of their song Dirty Harry at the BRIT Awards of 2006. At the Coachella festival of music on 18th of April, 2010, the band gave a live performance to one of the biggest crowds in the history of Coachella. Some over 70,000 people were in attendance to watch the bands' live act. They kicked off their first world tour since their inception as a band, on the 20th of July at Byblos, Lebanon. It is reported that this world tour of theirs will be taking them to the United Kingdom as well as Ireland in September. Then they are to proceed towards the United States in October, and are to complete their world tour by going to Europe in November and then to conclude they shall pass through New Zealand and Australia in December.
