Young Gangsta was born as Keenon Dae'quan Ray Jackson in 1990. When YG was just eighteen he formed a record label, 'Pu$haz Ink' with his friend DJ Mustard. He worked on his music and released a few songs on the internet, which gained him a fan following. His noticeable songs in that early stage were "She A Model" and "Aim Me".
Songs such as these brought YG to the attention of the record label Def Jam. The deal between the label and the artist was finalized and Def Jam signed YG in 2009. The president of the label L.A. Reid wanted someone to bring West Coast rap forward. YG with his singing skills and stage presence perfectly fit the description.
News about YG's debut album came in 2013 when the artist disclosed the name of the album and the name of the record label that would release it. Def Jam Recordings was selected to release the album 'My Krazy Life'. The album was previously titled 'I'm 4rm Bompton'. This news was followed by the announcement that the Canadian rapper Drake, would also feature on a song in the new album. Drake worked with YG on the song "Who You Love", which was produced by DJ Mustard. It was the third single released from the new album, the second one being 'Left, Right'. The album was finally released in May 2014 by Def Jam labels, Pu$haz Ink and CTE World. The album has many songs that stem from YG's own personal experiences.
YG worked on another project 'Blame It On the Street' and released it in 2014. This is a short film produced and written by YG which revolves around his life before he became famous. YG plays the lead role in the film, and the story covers the part of YG's life when he became a part of the infamous 'Piru Bloods gang'.
The film's soundtrack features guest appearances by several artists, including Big Wy, The Neighborhood, Nipsey Hussle, Jay 305 and Charlie Hood. The album elicited a favorable response and ended up on the US Billboard 200 chart at the 118th position. Apart from 'Blame It On the Stree,t' the rapper has also appeared in the film 'White T' as himself and played a larger role in the film 'We the Party'.
