Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was formed in London, back in 1946 through the untiring and inspired efforts of Sir Thomas Beecham. The history of the orchestra can be traced back to the Royal Philharmonic Society, which was formed in 1813 by a set of brilliant and aspiring musicians, who had big dreams. The Society was formed so that regular sessions of orchestra music could be organized and held. The society was named the Royal Philharmonic Society until King George V gave it the royal charter and bestowed the name upon it. However, when Beecham came into the scene he took the initiative to make an orchestra for the society and used his independent financial sources to keep the orchestra running. Originally, Beecham had given the orchestra the name London Philharmonic Orchestra, which was later changed when Queen Elizabeth II gave a royal charter to the orchestra.
The early years of the orchestra were scheduled for profitable contracts and special performances. These events included the famous Glyndebourne Festival Opera and concerts for the Royal Philharmonic Society and they were a huge help for the orchestra to gain strong footing in the society and make a name for itself. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra prospered greatly under the guidance of Sir Thomas Beecham and quickly rose to great heights. However, sadly after the death of Sir Thomas Beecham, the orchestra's luck fell out and its profits and popularity suffered a severe setback. It was not until the 1960s that the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra rose back to its previous standards, after the Arts Council recommended a subsidy for its benefit.
Since the 1960s, after the Queen helped the orchestra regain its lost position, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has been firmly in place and is doing exceptionally well in terms of music. Most of the sessions of the orchestra are held at the Royal Albert Hall. The music created by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra belongs to the light classical tone, which brings back memories from the past and also feels comfortable for the present time. Besides playing concerts, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has composed for several projects as well, which include The Red Shoes, Oliver III, The Tales of Hoffman, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes and The Bridge on River Kwai.
Over the course of years the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has had various conductors that played an important role in the development and growth of the orchestra. One of the most famous Principal Conductors that the orchestra has had is Rudolf Kempe. Kempe had a strong sense of musical understanding and used this to his advantage throughout his career. He always proclaimed music to be his passion and never spent his time or resources for any publicity for his own self. Kempe played a great role in the resurrection of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in the 1960s and took the opera to even greater heights than before.
At present the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is led by Principal Conductor Charles Dutoit. He is known to the music world for his perseverance and dedication to music. Charles Dutoit's creativity knows no bounds and he works tirelessly to make Royal Philharmonic Orchestra one of the best orchestras in the country. In fact it is through his efforts that Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the top five world class orchestras from London.
