The San Diego Symphony is an orchestra which is based in San Diego in California in the United States of America. The first time the premier show of this fantastic orchestra took place was on the 6th of December in 1910. This first live concert of the orchestra was held at the famous San Diego Civic Orchestra. 
 
At the moment, the San Diego Symphony orchestra performs in 100 live concerts every year. It performs in some subscribed series of concerts at the popular Copley Symphony Hall that was constructed in 1929. This symphony hall was constructed in 1929 as a movie theater known as the Fox Theater in a luxury style of French Rococo. In 1984 the theater was handed over to the orchestra. In 1989, the Symphony Towers which is known to be the second tallest structure in San Diego County was successfully constructed around the Copley Hall.
 
Some of the well known performances of the San Diego Symphony comprise of the Winter Pops Series, a Family Festival series, the Masterworks series, the Light Bulb Series, yearly holiday performances and many more. From the months of July all the way till September, the orchestra displays an outdoor Summer Pops seasonal performance. Its musicians of have also given live performances as the pit orchestra for the acclaimed San Diego Opera. As of late, a "Thursday Night Lite" live series of the orchestra was embedded into its schedule.
 
Since the formation of the San Diego Symphony orchestra, in its rich history, it has faced many times of fiscal issues which ultimately resulted in ceasing its operations. When the orchestra began in 1910, it rose to immense heights of fame. However, ten years later, financial problems caused it to limit its performances but it did not stop performing. Since the number of its performances was less, the orchestra suffered in terms of popularity. By May 1996, the orchestra filed for bankruptcy and totally ended all of its operations. In 1998, with the help of a $2 million donation from Larry Robinson and also by the means of some great pro bono attempts by outstanding bankruptcy attorneys such as Jeff Garfinkle and Ted Graham, the orchestra finally rose to its former glory and was back in performing live dazzling concerts once again.
 
The San Diego Symphony orchestra authorized a contracted with which the annual base salary of its musicians was increased and also resulted in an expansion of its live performances from 26 weeks to 41 weeks. In 2005, the music director of the orchestra was Jahia Ling. Ling, effectively extended his licensed contract in October 2007 till 2012. Its current executive director is Edward Gill while its principle pops conductor has been Marvin Hamlisch since 2006. The famous archivist of the orchestra, Melvin G. Goldbzband has recently published a great book which is based on the orchestra and is known as San Diego Symphony From Overture to Encore.

On December 8, 1910 the San Diego Symphony played its debut concert. The Symphony has been labeled one of the top most orchestras in the United States in its 97 years since its emergence. It provides ultimate quality in musical experiences in San Diego and around it.

By a grand combination of original and educational training intended to please all age groups and cultures, the symphony has made music a vital component of culture and academics in and around San Diego which is greatly appreciated by all people living there.

The symphony performs over 100 concerts each season and presents a vast variety of musical experiences. The symphony performed with Yo-Yo Ma, Yes, Charlotte Church, and Cirque Eloise in 2001. The traditional classical collection features guest artists including Pinchas Zukerman, Hilary Hahn and Angel Romero which is included in the Masterworks series.

The Winter Pops series features famous guest artists including Dave Brubeck, Johnny Mathis and Arturo Sandoval; also inclusive are the Family festival series which presents family friendly concerts; and also the Light Bulb Series which is such a series of concerts which explores classical music from entertaining and stimulating perspectives.

The Symphony performs an outdoor Summer Pops season each year from July to September. This series combines classical favorites and pop music in a jovial and open atmosphere on the scenic waterfront of San Diego.

The symphony has put together ten greatly admired recordings on the Naxos and Proarte labels. These include a collection from Hitchcock movies named Masters of Mayhem, Romeo and Juliet, Brahms Four Serious Songs and a transcription of Sexter No. 1 for orchestra, Glieres Symphony No. 3 and The Magical Mystical Mouse- an assortment of music from childrens movies and cartoons.

One of the most excellent classical music venues along the west coast is the Historic Copley Symphony hall which is from where the San Diego Symphony originates. It was actually built as a premiere movie house (Fox Theatre) in 1929.

This grand French Rococo style hall was awarded to the Symphony in 1984. Beautiful and majestic, this historic hall has only but complemented to the standing and importance of the San Diego Symphony.

Many a famous conductor including Earl Bernard Murray, David Atherton and Yoav Talmi have held the esteemed position of Music Director of the San Diego Symphony. Robert Shaw served as Music director of the symphony from 1953-1958.

Bernard Rands, the Symphonys then composer-in-residence won the Pulitzer Prize in 1983 which added to the exceptional reputation of the San Diego symphony.

The year 1992 saw the Symphony celebrate the 500th anniversary of Columbus landing with a broadcasted concert at the Chichen Itza Ruins in Mexico. The Symphony went on tour through the West Coast with Andrea Bocelli in 1998.

The New York Times acknowledged the San Diego Symphony as being placed firmly on the nations musical landscape as a result of a single largest donation ever made to a Symphony Orchestra.

On January 14, 2002, the Symphony rejoiced this announcement of the generous gift of $120 million given by Joan and Irwin Jacobs. This launched the Symphonys Endowment Campaign which was intended to ensure the future security of the orchestra.
