After a year, the symphony went to TRHS and stayed there until 1948. In 1954, it come back to Hoyt Sherman and finally moved to North High School after 3 years. The 67-68 season was stretched from 4 to 5 shows but in 1969 it planned to disband relations with DU which finally took place in 1974.
 
 

Krasnapolsky lead the season in 1977 while Joseph Giunta became the musical director of Des Moines Symphony in 1989 and under him the orchestra has emerged as a marvelous group well-recognized in the entire region. Today, DMS is recognized as one of the most prominent orchestras in the country. It performs Education Concerts, Family, Masterworks and Pops. In addition, it also performs for special concerts.
