Dawes is a folk rock band hailing from Los Angeles. It comprises of four members, two of whom are brothers. Taylor Goldsmith plays the guitar and is the lead vocalist, while his brother Griffin Goldsmith is the drummer. The lineup is completed by Wylie Gelber on bass and Tay Strathairn playing the keyboards.
Dawes was initially known as 'Simon Dawes' but once Blake Mills the co-song writer left the group, the remaining members agreed to take a different approach to their work. Instead of focusing on post punk music, Dawes invested their time in folk rock music. Simon Dawes toured with mainstream bands such as Maroon 5, Incubus and Band of Horses. As a result once Dawes was established, they had gained quite an exposure to live performances in front of huge audiences. Get Dawes tickets and hear the band sing their most popular songs.
The band released its debut album 'North Hills' in August 2009. The album which runs for almost fifty five minutes was recorded in a live setting to analog tape. This added a vintage sound to their music. Taylor Goldsmith is credited for the song writing and composition of the album. Apart from the band members, multi-instrumentalist Patrick Sansone also lent a helping hand in the album's recording. AbsolutePunk gave the album a rating of ninety three percent. The opening song for the album is 'That Western Skyline'. This first album established Dawes as a band that recreated the eighties rock music of California. The influence of artists such as Neil Young and Joni Mitchell is quite apparent in the sound that Dawes produces.
Dawes appeared on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson to mark their television debut in 2010. The band released their second album in 2011. It was named 'Nothing Is Wrong' and it featured on several charts. It reached the number five spot on the Billboard US Folk Albums chart. It also featured in the top ten of the US Independent Albums chart. The influence of the Laurel Canyon music is evident throughout the album especially in songs such as 'Time Spent in Los Angeles', 'A Little Bit of Everything' and 'Fire Away'. The album which is shorter than its predecessor, helped the band carve out a more defined path for their music; visiting the roots of rock music. With the release of this album many musicians took note of the budding band. Robbie Robertson recruited Dawes as his backing band for many of his performances. Dawes co headlined a tour with Blitzen Trapper. In 2012 the members featured in the series 'Parenthood' which airs on NBC, giving them more publicity.
With 'Nothing is Wrong' they managed to live up to the expectations of the fans after the release of their first album. They carried the momentum forward with their third album, 'Stories Don't End'. Three charts listed the album in the top five, while the US Billboard 200 placed it at the thirty sixth spot. Rolling Stone magazine gave the album four stars out of five. The album opens with the song 'Just Beneath the Surface'. The band moved to a more contemporary approach towards their music in this album. Griffith Goldsmith lends his vocals in the album and Blake Mills contributes to arrangements. Mills, who was a member of Simon Dawes, also wrote the song 'Hey Lover' and co-wrote the lyrics for 'Side Effects' with Taylor Goldsmith. 'Hey Lover', a peppy song which runs for just over two minutes and fifteen seconds, positions the band as a modern band with references to Google, while 'Most People' is a song from the perspective of a female. Songs such as these make Dawes a great band to listen to. Get Dawes tickets and listen to the band's music which resonates of the eighties, but brings forth fresh lyrical content for fans to enjoy.
