The LSU nickname is derived from its Confederate heritage, and it is taken from the Civil War fame of two Louisiana brigades. They fought hard, and came to be known as the "Louisiana Tigers."

Carl Maddox Fieldhouse (indoor track), Bernie Moore Stadium (outdoor track), Tiger Stadium (football), Pete Maravich Assembly Center (basketball, volleyball, gymnastics), Tiger Park (softball), and Alex Box Stadium (baseball.) are the areans in which the team plays. The LSU major rivals in football include the Ole Miss Rebels, as well as the Arkansas Razorbacks, the Alabama Crimson Tide, and the Auburn Tigers. LSU had reportedly violated the civil rights of female athletes. A federal court ruling regarding this described this violation as "arrogant ignorance" of female players needs.
