Soon after taking over, the Miles-Hofberger group renamed their new team the Baltimore Orioles. The name has a rich history in Baltimore, having been used by Baltimore baseball teams since the late 19th century.

In the 1890s, Several future Hall of Famers, such as "Wee" Willie Keeler, Wilbert Robinson, Hughie Jennings and John McGraw were included a powerful and innovative National League Orioles squad. 1998/1999: Beginning of a downturn
The Orioles were out of the playoffs with Miller at the helm. They also ended the season on the losing side. Gillick's contract was not renewed after its expiration in 1998. Frank Wren was made the General manager. Volatile slugger Albert Belle was added to the Orioles but the team's woes continued in the 1999 season, with stars like Rafael Palmeiro, Roberto Alomar, and Eric Davis leaving in free agency.

Angelos fired both Miller and Wren after a second straight losing season. Syd Thrift was named the new GM.

The Orioles updated the Bird in their logo in 1998 and then once again in 1999 to bring it to its present form.

2000-present
Going into the 2007 season, the Orioles will have had nine consecutive sub-.500 seasons. This is all due to the combination of lackluster play on the team's part, a string of ineffective management, and the ascent of the Yankees and Red Sox to the top of the game.
