Vicente Fernandez is a Mexican singer, born on 17th February, 1940. Over his 40 years in the music industry, he has rightly gained the title of being the "king of ranchero". Fernandez was born in Jalisco, Mexico. He spent most of his childhood at his father's ranch. He had to give up his education at an early age to work and ended up as a dish washer, later waiter and cashier. Later he was made the manager of the hotel. People called him "Chente". He often went to movies with his mother and watched Pedro Infante perform, wishing to be like him when he grow up. By the time he was 8 years of age, he started listening to music and practicing it on his guitar. That's when his musical journey started and he dreamed of being a mainstream singer one day. His first boost came when as a little boy; he participated in an Arandas' festival contest and won it. In 1954, an amateur contest was sponsored by Guadalajara and it was won by Fernandez. This was his first little breakthrough in music. He started playing at small gatherings and local clubs. Fernandez dedicated himself completely to music in 1960. He started appearing in a TV show "La Calandria musical".
Vicente Fernandez went looking for opportunities in the Mexico City in 1962 and got a job as a singer in a restaurant. During this time, he kept on auditioning for various labels, being rejected every time. Mexico City didn't give the artist what he was looking for so he went back and got married. The "Ranchera Throne" that was ruled by singers; Jorge Negrete, Javier Solis and Pedro Infante started getting vacant gradually as all these three kinds of Ranchero died mysteriously within a few years period, hence, leaving the throne empty. That was when all the companies he had been auditioning for all of a sudden started gaining interest in him. He started receiving calls from various different places. Sony Discos offered him his very first contract.
Vicente Fernandez released "Perdoname" in 1966. His career got a boost when he got a role in the film "Tacos al Carbon", which was his first hit movie. During a performance in 1970, Fernandez was broken the news that his father has died. Overwhelmed by emotions, but keen on not giving up the show, Fernandez went on stage and performed what is known as a very emotional performance that lasted till late night. Since then, Fernandez music career has known no boundaries. To date, he has recorded about 50 albums and has sung more than 300 songs. Fernandez greatest hit to date is "Volver, Volver" that was released in 1976. The album that sold in millions was released in 1983, named "15 Grandes con el numero uno".
Vicente Fernandez spent about 22 years in music industry without really getting any proper recognition. He had begun to think maybe he'll die that way, but in 1990, his patience was awarded when his album "Vicente Fernandez y las clasicas de Jose Alfredo Jimenez" made it to Billboard. He also won Univision Latin Music Award for "Mexican Regional Male Artist of the Year" five times. He was nominated for Grammy Awards and was titled as "Person of the Year" by Latin Recording Academy in 2002. He won Grammy Award for "Best Regional Mexican Album" in 2010, for the album "Necesito de Ti". His 70 years of life's struggle in the field of music are evident of his love and devotion for music. He never gave up, although it took him a lifetime to achieve what he had dreamed as a little boy. Truly, dreams do come true, but sometimes they take a longer road to reach you.
