Michael Franks is quite well known amongst jazz musicians and fans of jazz. He has a pure, smooth jazz style which he had started to perfect while still receiving an education. During this time he composed music for three films, Cockfighter, Count Your Bullets and Zandy's Bride. This was certainly a large accomplishment for him and also the start of his musical career. Shortly afterward he released his first album, self-titled ‘Michael Franks’. On this album was a minor hit titled “Can't Seem to Shake this Rock 'n Roll.” Since his first album may have been comparatively less well known than his later releases, Warner Bros. Records released the 1973 album ‘Michael Franks’ as ‘Previously Unavailable’ in 1983, on the tenth anniversary of the release of his self-titled debut album. Up until this point, he had released nine albums.
Besides Warner Bros. Records, Franks has worked with four other labels. He was born and raised in Southern California to parents who loved swing music. Surprisingly, his only musical education consisted of a few private lessons in which he learned how to play the guitar. Michael has the ability to play other instruments as well, namely the mandolin and the cabasa, a percussion instrument which was given to him by the famous Ray Armando. He often uses these instruments on stage during his performances. While studying at the prestigious UCLA during his early adulthood, Michael was influenced by other prominent jazz musicians of his day. These artists included Miles Davis, Patti Page, Dave Brubeck and many more. If you're a fan of these musicians and their musical style you're guaranteed to love Michael Franks.
Besides his talent as a musician, his songwriting abilities have not gone unnoticed. Other prominent artists have recorded songs written by him, such as Ringo Starr, Lyle Lovett, Carmen McRae, The Manhattan Transfer, The Carpenters and Dianna Krall. His lyrics are unique and touching and have a poetic quality to them. These, paired with his smooth, jazzy music make for a great combination. Michael's biggest hit to date was part of the 1983 album titled Passionfruit, called “When Sly Calls (Don't Touch that Phone).” Other songs that became popular on radio include “Monkey See, Monkey Do”, “Your Secret's Safe With Me”, “Tell Me About It” and “Island Life.”
Fans who attend his concerts are amazed to find that despite his age and the number of years he has been producing music, his compositions are still as true as ever and his performances uplifting. He is known to play fan favorites at performances and never gives up the chance to play an encore. He is backed by a band which showcases great talent in the variety of musical instruments which they play. This timeless artist is still going at it strong and is in great demand so pick up cheap Michael Franks tickets while they're still available.
