Born in Mexico and raised in New York, Arturo O Farrill is son of the popular Latin Jazz musician, ranger and bandleader, Chico O'Farrill. He got his education from the Manhattan School of Music and the Aaron Copland School of Music. He started off by collaborating with several bands, meanwhile looking for some direction. For a long time he was uncertain of the road he needed to follow. After his father's death, Arturo took over his place as the Chico O'Farrill Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestras' musical director and continued his legacy for some time. A few years later, he created a band of his own, the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. The purpose of discovering ALJO was introducing the vital musical traditions of Afro Latin jazz to a wider audience. To date, Arturo O Farrill has been running both the bands simultaneously. His wide stylistic and geographical range in music has earned Arturo a positive feedback from many critics across the US.
Apart from recording and performing, Arturo O Farrill also happens to be a music teacher. In the past, he has conducted many workshops, master classes and seminars throughout the world, not just to students, but teachers of all levels as well. Arturo has taught at The University of Massachusetts, Manhattan School of Music, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Brooklyn College and SUNY Purchase. His unique perceptive regarding music has earned him immense fame and recognition in the industry.
To date, he has released ten studio albums, the most recent one titled; The Noguchi Sessions hit the shelves in 2012. Most of his records have been nominated for the Grammys, out of which Song for Chico has won one for “Best Latin Jazz Album.” Farrill has also composed soundtracks for critically acclaimed films like, Chico and Rita, Calle 54, Hollywoodland and Salud. Because of his experience, Arturo was asked to join the judging panel of the 9th and 10th annual Independent Music Awards, where he assisted independent musicians' careers.
