The Forgotten Carols is a story that retells the story about the birth of Jesus, through a completely new perspective. The heartwarming and magical musical has become a tradition for thousands of families to start their Christmas season with. Michael McLean composed the music on this album, to convey the meaning of the story. He tells it through the lesser known participants, such as a shepherd and an innkeeper, who interacted with Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus. Suitable for children and adults, the fantastic musical provides the best excuse for an evening out with family. With the holiday season just around the corner, rush to get The Forgotten Carols tickets booked before they are sold out.
The main characters in the musical are, nurse Constance and her patient, John. Nurse Constance has been brought up by a strict mother who emphasized order in everything. An austere follower of her principles, Constance operates by the book, leaving no room for emotions or fun. Constance has been assigned the responsibility to look after an apparently senile patient, whose family has gone away for the Christmas holidays. Uncle John, who belongs to a very wealthy family, is believed to have psychological problems. However, when Constance interacts with the aged John, she is surprised to find him lucid, energetic and cheerful; the very opposite of Constance. John's lively demeanor breaks through Constance's stiff façade and touches her heart. Things seem to be pleasantly enough, until John makes a startling statement about his age.
Michael Mclean's The Forgotten Carols features ten songs. Beginning with the songs "The Innkeeper", the music lineup includes songs "Homeless", "The Shepherd", "Handel's Dream" and "Mary Let Me Hold Her Baby" along with a few others. Constance, the humorless nurse also sings a songs in the play. The emotional, "I Cry the Day That I Take the Tree Down," shows her transformation into "Connie Lou". The compassionate Uncle John, sings the song "I Was Not His Father, He Was Mine". The last song on the album is "Homeless Reprise", a fitting song to end the magical tale.
Over the years, theatrical productions of The Forgotten Carols have not only been showcased all over America but also in other countries like Germany, Ireland and Ukraine. The success factor has always been the touching story. McLean came up with the album over two decades ago, in 1981. He was given the idea to write and record a Christmas album by publishers "Deseret Book", who wanted him to write songs about Christmas. Thinking that all the famous Christmas songs have already been written, McLean initially refused. It was some time later that McLean thought over the forgotten characters in the nativity story. Soon the first carol was taking shape as McLean mused over what the innkeeper would have to say, once he realized who he had turned away. Shortly, songs about the fourth shepherd, who did not go to greet the newborn baby and Joseph, Mary's husband, were also beginning to form.
McLean came up with the album and an accompanying book with the soundtracks. McLean presented the project to Deseret Book, who were skeptical about the success of The Forgotten Carols. However, McLean convinced Deseret Book, by undertaking the responsibility of promoting the project himself. He went on a one time promotional tour, using props and costumes to play all the parts himself. He enlisted the help of local choir boys to sing the songs. People liked what they heard and the demand grew. Eventually professional musical theatre performers were taking part in productions. As time passed, the music album had evolved into a popular full-fledged play from a one man show.
