New York City Ballet is one of the biggest ballet companies of the United States. The company was the idea of Lincoln Kirsten, and it was founded in 1948. New York City Ballet got its name when it was made resident of City Center of Music and Dance. In only a few months, the ballet was moved to New York, which was an evidence of its rising success. It was the very first American ballet to have two dedicated venues, one Saratoga Performing Arts Center and the second David H. Koch Theatre at Manhattan and New York respectively. Balanchine also founded a separate ballet dancing training academy by the name of The School of American Ballet.  He got the real chance to show off his creativity when the ballet was moved to State Theatre the very next year of its inauguration.
 
New York City Ballet faced downfall during World War II, when Kirsten had to join the army. However, Balanchine managed to keep their dream of ballet alive by keeping coaching going on at Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. After the war, the two friends got together again to relive their dream. They formed a Ballet Society the very next year. City Center's Finance Committees' chairman Morton Baum got impressed by the high quality and creative performance and offered help. In return of his favor, both of them promised to bring to the audience the best ballet ever presented within America.
 
New York City Ballet's first Artistic Assistant Director was Jerome Robbins. Balanchine served as the choreographer till his death in 1983. In 1964, Philip Johson was given the task of designing the theatre for New York City Ballet. By the end of April, it was constructed and ready for its debut performance. Currently, the ballet hosts shows twenty three weeks a year. Summer host for the ballet has been The Saragota Performing Arts Center since 1966. The show has been on a number of international tours, including tours to European countries. It has been taken to Australia, Russia, Japan, Brazil, South Korea and Taiwan.
 
During winter, the company arranges about sixty ballets and during summer about forty, each year. With the passage of time, a number of famous ballet dancers from around the globe have joined the company from outside as well.
