Moulin Rouge
A musical film that has touched the hearts of many people around the globe. Moulin Rouge is a French title which means Red Windmill. A motion picture of the millennium and till today has been talk of the town. It is a new version of a romantic Romeo and Juliet love story.
Moulin Rouge was the work of Luhrmann and his wife. Before introducing the story line to the readers let us first learn who the above mentioned couple are and how were they both director inspired to make a musical such as Moulin Rouge. Luhrmann is the director of the motion picture.
Their inspiration took place when the couple toured India. They planned to watch an Indian movie whose had impressed them both. When they went to the cinema, it was seen that nearly 2,000 audience members were engrossed fully in the story picture involving high comedy, high tragedy, killings etc it was an emotion packed movie that moved peoples hearts.
Apart from the emotional drama the music was great which really helped in forming an impact on the audiences. That movie turned out to be an inspiration for making a musical which would be remembered by all for many years.
Luhrmann gave an insight whether this kind of musical could be appreciated in the western culture or not. After giving it a thorough thought and discussing the pros and cons with his wife, he finally agreed to make romantic musical and gave it the name of Moulin Rouge. The musical turned out to be a Romeo and Juliet act in a very refreshing way.
Making a new is not an easy task at all. As there are sessions included where planning of how to get going takes place. A story written with powerful words that would attract the attention of people viewing it. With the change in time, technology has been advanced and saves time as compared to the old motion pictures that took quite some time to be released.
The story of Moulin Rouge takes place in the beautiful city of Paris i.e. Montmartre where the actual red light area stands. It is a beautiful romantic story comprising a hero a heroin and of course a villain. The story starts off with a British writer coming to Paris to become a part of the Bohemian culture. There he bumps into a musical troupe who are attempting to present a new routine for the owner of a cabaret (Moulin Rouge). Christian, the British writer helps them and helps himself by finalizing the show through writing for the troupe.
He on the other hand gets lucky to accompany the troupe to the cabaret and present his work himself to the queen of cabaret, Satine who is the heroine of the movie. That very night the owner of Moulin Rouge arranges a meeting with a wealthy duke who is also interested in buying the place.
Satine mistakenly takes Christian to her room, but after some time realizes that the man is only impressed by himself as he starts reciting his poetry and on the other hand seemed attracted to her. After a while there enters the two villainous characters the wealthy duke and the owner of the cabaret. Satine saves him of the wrath explaining to them that Christian is only here for the sheer purpose of displaying his writing talents.
And thus starts the emotional attachment between the hero and the heroine. Christian quickly took the opportunity and improvised a new plot to Spectacular! Spectacular! as an illusion of the current situation, with introducing an evil maharajah who has the intentions of wooing the love of an Indian princess who is actually in love with a poor sitar player.
The wealthy and absent minded Duke who was unaware to see through the whole show's story, blindly agrees to finance the show, but with the condition of seeing Satine. The next many days, the troupe gets busy in preparing for the show. And so does Satine and Christian both get busy in getting to know more of each other.
After the interval takes place the movie gets a lot more exciting as the other half of the movie shows the intense love that is developed among Satine and Christian with tragedy accompanied with it. Tragedy that entails the heroine as she is suffering from Tuber closis and of which only the cabaret owner is aware of and he keeps this news only to himself that Satine is on the last stage of Tuber Closis.
One tragic news after the other prevails and finally forces her to take a decision of leaving her hero for if she does not agree to it then the wealthy and powerful duke will kill Christian if Satine does not spend time with him. Knowing the truth about losing her lover and her slow steps towards death, Satine takes the plunge and confronts Christian with the news of faking her love for him all this time.
This fact was hard to digest for the poor guy who believes in the truth, beauty, freedom, and love, Love of his life that he can not imagine to live without Satine. Christian too depressed to listen to when the show opens, but gets the strength enough to approach his love and throws the money that he managed to get by selling off his precious typewriter, trying to buy the love of his life just as the Duke was empowered to do so. How much Satine tries to send him away, Christian became more and more compelled on striving to bring her back.
In this tug of war, they both do not realize the fact that they have reached the stage and it is only when the spotlight s spot them and they confusingly are improvised as the poor sitar player and the his love and the owner tries to let the show continue, but to the utter surprise Christian walks off the stage. As he is approaching the stairs to get down the stage, he hears from an encouraging voice that the greatest thing ever learnt is to love and be loved in return.
This realization also strikes Satine who sings the secret song (that both had been practicing) expressing her love to Christian and he in response goes back on the stage and accompany her in the singing ignoring the audiences and especially the duke's anger.
Despite his attempts to order the bodyguards to get rid of Christian, both the lovers manage to finish the song without incident to a standing ovation. Seeing this, the furious Duke storms out of the sight.
Finally, with all the performers assembling to take a bow, it is there that Satine succumbs to her illness, and dies in the arms of her lover, after which even Moulin Rouge dies off without his heroin. Respecting the last wish of his undying love for Satine, Christian writes a love story.
With this the story comes to the end and is appreciated a lot by the viewers who somewhat become emotional themselves. Till date is remembered to be one of the classic love story of the millennium and has been awarded for the overall picture.
