University of Utah's athletes Utah Utes find the basis of their name from a Native American clan Ute. The Men's basketball squad is referred to as "Runnin' Utes". On the other hand, the women's squad was the "Lady Utes", though from a few years they have dropped Lady and goes with "Utes" only. The women's gymnasts stay invincible as the "Red Rocks".

Utah Utes kicked off their football program in the late nineteenth century and became the team with the highest percentage among teams contending in over ten bowls. Their home ground for football Rice-Eccles Stadium has witnessed many highs and lows since 1927. They have brought home twenty three conference trophies. The team won their last seven bowl games of that season in a big way. This became the second longest winning streak in Bowl game by the people of Utah. They were the only Mountain West Conference participant to reach to a BCS bowl.

The performance of the team maxed out in the 2000s, concluding an amazing season with an average of .663. Utes were on the top of their game and it got even better. The 2004 dawned as their best season and the best in varsity sport's history. Their exceptional performance earned them a direct spot in the BCS game. This was the first time for any non bowl conference team to qualify for BCS.

In 2005, the Utah Utes played against Pittsburgh Panthers at Fiesta Bowl, who were the Big East champions. According to the AP Poll, Utes was fourth in raking at the end of the season. Their star quarterback Alex Smith also made them proud by being drafted at number 1 in the NFL Draft that year for San Francisco 49ers. This was a first not just for Smith but also for the state. The varsity swelled with pride when their Andrew Bogut earned the same status in NBA Draft. This made Utah University the only sports program to have the honor of producing two number 1 draft players in a year.

The University of Utes athletes have also maintained a decent standing in Basketball. The Running Utes is ranked at the ninth position for winning most number of seasons. Their participation for twenty eight times have made them seventh in the most appearances by a school. They have won twenty eight championships in basketball along with ten conference titles to their credit. This makes Running Utes the fifth best team in the National Collegiate Athletics Competition.

The subsequent success of Utah Utes athletes has been an eminent part of their sports program over the years. It is treated more like a part of their tradition to create legendary pros of future. The Milwaukee Bucks' Andrew Bogut and San Francisco 49ers' Andrew Smith are the golden examples set for the future athletes of their squad. The Utah Utes are known for their up notch athletes and coaches. Some of the iconic names of NCAA have been associated with them such as "Bill Foster"," Vadal Perterson", "Rick Majerus" and "Jack Gardener".

The heydays of Utah Basketball team started as early as in the 40s. They earned the Division I title of 1944 after playing in Final Fours followed by 1947's NIT trophy. They also participated in the Final Four in 1966 and made it to the NCCA Division I Championship game but could not win. Despite their loss in 1944's Final Four game, "Jerry Chambers" was awarded the title of "Most Valuable Player (MVP)" of that season.

Utah Utes women's basketball team has also been quite successful. Their best score was in 2005 when they were ranked second at conference level and fourteenth overall at National Level. The program made headway in the 2006's NCAA tournament surprising many strong rivals like Arizona State Sun Devils and Middle Tennessee. This team also made it once to the Elite Eight by defeating Boston College in a cutthroat competition. Their entry in the regional finals was the first one for the school and their Mountain West Conference program. They made it to the 2nd seeded to compete with Maryland who was the national champions for that season.
