Winnipeg Jets were formerly known as the Atlanta Thrashers and were based in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2011, True North Sports & Entertainment Company which is based in Manitoba bought the league for $170 million and brought them to the city of Winnipeg before the start of the 2011-12 NHL season. The relocation took place with the approval of the Board of Governors of the National Hockey League. True North did not buy the naming rights of Atlanta Thrasher. Therefore, the team was given the name that originally belonged to the city's ice hockey team which had shifted to Phoenix in 1996 and now play under the name of Phoenix Coyotes. This move has made them the first NHL team to be relocated in the last fourteen years. The last team to change places was Hartford Whales who became the Carolina Hurricanes in the year 1997. However, this shifting did not change their place within the NHL. The Winnipeg Jets, like the Atlanta Thrashers, represent the Southeast Division in the National Hockey League's Eastern Conference. The team was scheduled to be moved to another conference, unnamed as yet, for the 2012-13 NHL season or to become part of the Central Division, but the National Hockey League Players' Associated blocked it. So the team has stayed in the Southeast Division.
Where their performance is concerned, the Winnipeg Jets have yet to prove their mettle. As Atlanta Thrashers, they qualified for Stanley Cup playoffs only one time, the season of 2006-07. In 2011-12 NHL season, their appearance schedule was arranged in such a way as to accommodate their relocation. Their first few games were against the Columbus Blue Jackets as part of the pre-game season. They made their debut in the regular season on October 9, 2011 where they played against the Montreal Canadiens. The game was played in their home arena, the MTS Centre, which was sold-out for the match. Though they lost their very first match 1-5, they showed some real talent which gave their fans a lot to cheer about.
The Winnipeg Jets have a number of top players. These include the team captain and left winger, Andrew Ladd. He has a great record. He was part of the Carolina Hurricanes team who won the Stanley Cup in 2006 and member of the Chicago Blackhawks team who won the Stanley Cup in 2010. So he may prove to be lucky for the Jets and lead them to a big win. Others include Nikolai Antropov, the defense player, Zach Bogosian who is also member of the US national team, and an All-Star Gamer, Dustin Byfuglian.
So the hopes are up. Keep your fingers crossed while you buy the Winnipeg Jets tickets!
