The UNLV Rebels are the brilliant athletic program of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. They are a member of the NCAA Division I, and are a part of the Mountain West Conference. Their major opponents are the Nevada Wolf Pack of the University of Nevada, Reno. Being the two major colleges in the state of Nevada, the two teams fight for the trophies in several sports.

The Battle for Nevada is a famous football game that is held each year between the two college teams. The winner of the game takes home the Fremont Cannon which is the heaviest and the most expensive trophy in college football.  Built in 1970, the Fremont Cannon is very much similar to the Howitzer Cannon that was awarded to the American explorer and politician, John C. Frémont in the middle of nineteenth century. The first match between the two teams took place in 1969 and since then, Nevada has won the cannon eight years in a row. In total, Nevada has won twenty three out of the thirty eight games played between the two teams.

The Rebels have got different names for different sports teams; for instance the men's basketball team is known as the Runnin' Rebels while the baseball team is commonly known as the Hustlin' Rebels. In 1990, the Runnin' Rebels basketball team defeated the Duke University and set a new record for the biggest blowout in college basketball history and won the NCAA National Championship. The Rebels men and women golf teams have also got many awards and honors to their credit. The men have won six Conference Championships, four NCAA West Regional titles, two National Coach of the Year Awards and the National Championship in 1998 among many other honors. The talented team has also spawned a few capable national champions including Warren Schutte and Ryan Moore.

The UNLV Rebels men’s basketball team plays its home games at the Thomas & Mack Center and the women’s basketball team plays at the COX Pavilion. Founded in 1983, Thomas & Mack Center has the capacity to house more than eighteen thousand people while COX Pavilion can seat twenty five hundred basketball enthusiasts. The Hustlin' Rebels play their baseball matches at the Earl E. Wilson Stadium that is located on the UNLV campus and has a seating capacity of three thousand people.
