Troy Trojan is the name assigned to the team that participates in sport activities for Troy University, namely football, basketball and baseball. Initially, in the early 1900's, the nickname for the team was Bulldogs and the team was also sometimes referred to as Teachers. In 1931, however, this changed to Red Wave by Albert Elmore. But during the seventies, the university decided to name it Trojans through a vote from the student body. This decision was finalized hours before a game against Northeast Louisiana.

The university has had a football team since 1946 and has come out as the winning party in several national championship games since then, like the 1968, 1984 and 1987 games. In 1995, the Troy Trojans won a comprehensive victory, which resulted in their admission to Division I-AA, where they could playoff against other teams of that caliber. Once the Troy Trojans moved to the first division, in a match in Mississippi in 2001, after defeating the students of MSU by 21 against 9, they secured their first ever victory at a Bowl Championship Series level. 

 With regards to bowl games, The Troy Trojan football team lost their initial match in 2004. But subsequently achieved success in 2006, when they won against students from Rice by scoring 41 against 17. This was possible after the Trojans became members of the Sunbelt Conference, initially for football, but later in 2005, for the remaining sports as well. And this allowed them to compete in the New Orleans Bowl, which they eventually won.

The team coach has been with this team since 19 consecutive seasons and under him, the Trojans have won numerous titles and made numerous appearances at various playoffs.  The logo for the team has been updated to reflect the new image of the Trojans as a force to be reckoned with. It has been upgraded with the alphabet T, made out in resemblance to a sword, to create an aura of intimidation. This is complemented with the upgrade of the helmets, which has gone from being simple to reflecting an ominous looking Trojan. The current status of the team is such that it has 12 professional players; with 9 of the players as part of the National Football League, 2 in the Australian Football League and 1 in the Canadian Football League.
