Southern Illinois University is one of the oldest and the finest universities of America. More than 20,000 students are currently enrolled in the university making SIU recognized in the U.S. News & World Report rankings as a National University. It has also been ranked 4th among public universities in Illinois. Between the year 1913 and 1962, the Southern Illinois University was also a member of the Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Apart from producing well educated students for the past many years, the university has also given birth to some of the best athletes of all times and not only male athletes but also females have shown a great deal of interest and are a part of several women's varsity teams. These super talented athletes are known as the Southern Illinois Salukis. The university sponsors 16 varsity teams and most of them compete in the Missouri Valley Conference. Some of the men's and women's teams that compete annually are basketball, swimming, golf, tennis, cross country etc. Currently, the Salukis are playing their home football games at the Saluki Stadium and the basketball games at the SIU arena. In almost each one of their matches, thousands of fans could be seen going crazy and chanting for their favorite players.

Southern Illinois University's marching band has also been playing a major role in encouraging the Salukis. It is a huge band comprising of both men and women who perform at various home games of the Salukis. The band is also referred to as the 'Marching Salukis'. They have also performed in presidential addresses in Carbondale by Bill Clinton as well as during the halftime for the Chicago Bears, St. Louis Cardinals and St. Louis Rams. That's not just it, the 'Marching Salukis' are known for their world famous patriotic medley, Saluki Salute To America that opens with 'America the Beautiful' and then ends up with 'The Star-Spangled Banner'. They have performed the same piece at various events including the 1982 World Series.

The Southern Illinois Salukis are lucky to have one of the greatest marching bands of all times. Apart from that, the all new Saluki stadium according to the 5 year old plan has now finally been constructed. It is more spacious now and had its opening on September 2010 with a sold out crowd of more than 15000 fans. Hopefully the upcoming event is also going to have a heavy turnover. The new and improved Saluki Stadium turned out to be lucky for the football players as they defeated Quincy right in the opening match that took place at the venue. All the fans can come and watch any match they want to and set the arena ablaze by singing the popular fight song, 'Go Southern Go'.
