University of New Hampshire located at Durham, North Hampshire is one of the most prestigious institutions in the Northeast and has been considered as a leader in education and research. It was founded in 1866 as the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts. The institution came into being by federal government land grants that were provided to establish colleges to serve the sons and daughters of farming and laboring families. And with the development in human systems and with the consideration of athletic importance New Hampshire Wildcats came into being.

At present the New Hampshire Wildcats is a varsity team consisting on 20 teams subdivided as 8 men and 12 women teams catering all genres of sports. New Hampshire Wildcats tickets have a history of selling out fast whenever these teams are playing anywhere. It holds division I in NCAA and the current athletic director of this varsity team is Marty Scarano. The nickname of the University of New Hampshire athletic varsity team is the Wildcats. The costumes with wild cat logo are worn by the fans, cheer leaders and is the logo signifying the team uniform. The official mascot of UNH is a Wild E. Cat and was projected after a ballet poll cast by the students. The colour of there uniform is Blue and White and the fight song of Wildcats is "On To Victory".

UNH holds the membership of the America East Conference for the sports like basketball, cross country, track and field, soccer, swimming, diving, tennis, women's crew, field hockey, lacrosse, gymnastics, and volleyball. The ice hockey team of UNH is well recognized on national level and holds the Division I FCS level in Colonial Athletic Association for football. They also have a strong and much improved basket ball team at their disposal.The athletic department of UNH has provided full facilities for the betterment of the teams coming under the banner of New Hampshire Wildcats. These facilities are mostly converged on the west side of the campus of UNH. The Lundholm Gymnasium is home for both men's and women's basketball teams, the volleyball team and the gymnastics team. The Whittemore Center is used by UNH men's and women's ice hockey teams and is considered as an arena that brought university's athletic facilities to the state-of-the-art level thus making it leader amongst regional colleges and universities. Cowell Stadium named after the former Wildcats athletic director and football coach, William H. "Butch" Cowell is home of Wildcat football team for the past 69 years. The Memorial Field is home field for both lacrosse and field hockey teams while Bremner Field is used by both men's and women's soccer teams of UNH. Lewis Fields is the primary home for the UNH women's soccer program and is also a part of the University's athletic complex. There is a state of the art outdoor track facility named after Reggie "Racetrack" Atkins a UNH graduated from the class of 1928 who was the top quarter-mile runner on Paul Sweet's 1924 track team. This track is facilitated with a 400-meter synthetic-surface track, runways for the pole vault, jump pits for the long and the triple jump, a 3,000-meter steeplechase and a space for throwing events. While there is a UNH indoor track which is located inside the Field House named after the first coach of men's track Paul Sweet. Apart from this indoor track UNH's Field House also houses the Henry C. Swasey Pool which is the home of the New Hampshire Wildcats swimming and diving team. It is a 25-yard pool that has six lanes for competitive use.New Hampshire Wild Cats are symbolic of their mascot that is small but efficient and fast.
