The University of Michigan has 24 varsity sports teams that are known as the Wolverines. These sports teams take part in the NCAA's Division I as well as in the Big Ten Conference in all sports with the exception of men's ice hockey. The men's ice hockey team takes part in the NCAA D1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

The University of Michigan is the only educational body in NCAA history that has won at least one national championship in baseball (twice), basketball (men's - once), football (11 times), and ice hockey (men's - 9 times).

The Wolverines have also won the NCAA Division I national championships in women's field hockey (once), men's swimming and diving (11 times), men's tennis (once), men's golf (twice), men's gymnastics (thrice), women's softball (once), and men's outdoor track and field (once).

On the whole, the University of Michigan's 32 official NCAA Division I titles ranks eighth all-time. This only falls just behind UCLA, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, LSU, Stanford University, USC, and Texas. In NCAA D1 men's sports only, the University of Michigan stands at sixth all-time in championships. They are just behind Stanford, Oklahoma State, USC, UCLA, and Arkansas. The University of Michigan 's official NCAA Division I national championships are from ten different sports. Their broad achievements can match University of Texas for 4th place in the NCAA record book. The only others with titles in 16 varying sports, are the UCLA and Stanford. One other with titles in 15 varying sports is the USC. This means that the Wolverines are just behind these three.

The team that gets the most support in the University of Michigan is the football team. Michigan University's football program is rated among the best in college football history. This university took the first Rose Bowl match in 1902. It has also holds the NCAA-record [860 games] with an all-time winning average of .745. The latter is also an NCAA record. With the Wolverine football program, the university has to its credit 11 national titles.The Ice hockey team of the University of Michigan is a member of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. This team plays its home matches at Yost Ice Arena. Under its program, it has managed to win 9 NCAA national championships [1948, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1955, 1956, 1964, 1996, and 1998]. This is an NCAA record.

The men's basketball team of the University of Michigan plays its matches at Crisler Arena. The team has had success in 12 Big Ten regular-season conference titles. It has also succeeded in the inaugural Big Ten Tournament in 1998. However, the team had to forfeit this because of NCAA violations. The basketball team has made its appearance in the NCAA Final Four 6 times [1964, 1965, 1976, 1989, 1992 & 1993].

Notable players who have played for the team include Gary Grant, Terry Mills, Glen Rice, Jalen Rose, Daniel Horton, Bernard Robinson, Rumeal Robinson, Chris Webber, Jamal Crawford, Cazzie Russell, and Mark Hughes. Mark Hughes is presently the Sacramento Kings assistant coach.
