The Houston Cougars-- the Coogs are the varsity athletic teams of the University of Houston. They play for the Division I of the Conference USA belonging to the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The Houston's are known for the speed and fighting spirit of the Coogs. The varsity teams of Houston are sixteen in number including both men and women representation. The men and women athletes of the Cougars compete in sports like football, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, golf, cross-country, track & field, tennis and swimming. These teams are amongst the top teams of the intercollegiate sports with the record breaking sixteen-time national championship victory by the men's golf team.

The official colors of the Houston Cougars are scarlet and Albino white. These are the ancestral colors of Houston's and carry a deeper meaning to it. The Scarlett color symbolizes blood as a source of life and soul. The Scarlet color is also a representation of perseverance and courage. The Albino White is there for purity of mind and heart leading to a dedication of serving faithfully. The white also emphasizes the compassion and goodness. The official mascots of the Houston Cougars are Shasta and Sasha. These teams have always been a point of old traditions and values. They also had the tradition of having a live cougar as their mascot and the cougar was named as Shasta. The famous of them all is the Shasta - the lady who featured in many ads. The Houston's no longer carry a real cougar but the spirit remains the same.

The Cougars famous team includes their football team that started off in1946. The football team plays in Robertson Stadium and is represented in the USA Conference of the NCCA Division I. This team is currently coached by Kevin Sumlin for two years. This is most commonly referred to as UH and has many records. This team has overall won 10 conference championships and has also earned a Heisman trophy. Many of the players of Cougars football team has also made it to the College Football Hall of Fame. There all time rivals include the team of Rice Owls and Texas Longhorns.

The Basketball team of the Cougars is also of great significance. The team plays in the C- USA conference in the western division. They play all of their home games in the Hofheinz Pavilion and their head coach is Tom Penders for five years. This team has been extremely prolific with many amazing performances. They have been the Conference tournament champions for the five times and have been the Conference regular season champions for seven times. The team also has some amazing performances in National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournaments. Phi Slama Jama was the nick name associated to Houston Cougars as they were the popular basketball team of this varsity. They were famous for their slam dunking and fiery, fast-breaking play.

The baseball team of the Houston is yet another important name in the national collegiate sports. This team like all the other Houston teams plays for division I USA Conference. They are coached by Rayner Noble since 1994. Their home games are hosted at Cougar field and which houses around 5000 people. This team has been seven times winner of the conference Championship and has appeared in many Series, Super Regional, and NCAA Regional as well.

The Houston is supposed to have strong rivalries with Rice Owls and University of Texas. The rice owls are the cross country football team and both if them compete annually for the Bayou Bucket trophy. The Houston is the current trophy holders and has won it by defeating rice in the Roberson stadium. The Rivalry with University of Texas is the advent Houston Cougar Paw tradition starting many years ago.
