There are 16 inter collegiate sports in which the team of Colorado State University competes in both for men and women, including 10 sports for women indoor track, outdoor track, basketball, golf, tennis, cross country, water polo, softball, volleyball and swimming along with 6 for men including, cross country, golf, football, basketball, indoor and outdoor track.

Colorado State Rams play in the Mountain West Conference of NCAA Division I. Apart from Rams, 8 other teams from other institutions also compete in the Mountain West Conference.

The Mountain West Conference was founded in 1999. Mountain West Conference resulted from the division of Western Athletic Conference, which incorporated 16 teams from different instituitions.

As of today, Colorado State Rams have been able to fetch 9 Mountain West Conference Championship wins along with 11 regular season titles.

Initially the Colorado State University was known as the Colorado Agriculture and Mechanical College before its name was changed to the present one. During that time University's team was called the Aggies.

Colorado State Rams football team, play their home games at Hughes Stadium. For the 2005 season, the Sonny Lubick Field underwent renovation that cost around $15.2 Million. The field is named after the renowned head coach of the team.

Rams Men's and Women's basketball games are played at Moby Arena which was erected in 1966, and underwent renovation in 1996. Colorado State Rams volleyball team also plays its home games at Moby Arena.

The official mascot of the Colorado State University was named Ram in 1946, however the current representation of the official mascot is CAM the RAM.

The name CAM is the reference to the acronym of the university's former name, which was Colorado Agriculture and Mechanical College.

During University's football games, CAM runs the field during the beginning as well as the half times of the game. On May 1, 1957, Colorado State University was started to be known as the Rams and the official colors of the team included Gold and Green.

Amy Van Dyken was a swimmer at Colorado State University and won an Olympic gold medal along with a NCAA Championship. Amy later made her come back to the University to attain training from the head coach John Mattos prior to making her appearance in 2000 Olympics.

In 1996 Olympics Van Dyken won a total of 4 medals and wrote her name on the pages of US history as the only female athlete to win 4 Medals in one Olympics games.

Another athlete from the Colorado Agriculture and Mechanical College, Glenn Morris won a Gold Medal in 1936 at the decathlon held at 1936 Olympics in Berlin.

Thurman Fum McGraw also graduated from the Colorado State University and was a notable football player. Under his leadership Colorado State University appeared in 1949 Raisin Bowl, which was team's first ever bowl game appearance.

McGraw remained the part of Colorado State University for about 40 years and played his role at various administrative and coaching duties. Bill Green, another Colorado State University Graduate, later went on to become a major league basketball player as he was the first draft pick by the Boston Celtics.
