Formed in 1990, the Checkers is a Charlotte based team that competes in American Hockey League's Western Conference. Currently owned by MAK Hockey, LLC that is run by Michael Kahn, the ice hockey team has won four Southern division titles in 1995 to 1998, two regular season titles in 1995 and 1996 and a Calder Cup in 1995. At the time of the team's creation, it was initially named Capital District Islanders till 1993. From 1993 to 2010, the Islanders became the Albany River Rats after which it was purchased by Michael Kahn. With this the team relocated to Charlotte and played its first game in October, 2010. Over twelve thousand five hundred attended the event establishing a new record for the greatest attendance for an ice hockey event in the city. The Checkers broke their own record in 2011 with an attendance of twelve thousand nine hundred people and then in 2012 with over thirteen thousand attendees.
