The main roles of the opera consists of Princess Turandot, Emperor Altoum, father of Princess Turandot, Timur, the Unknown Prince, Calaf, a slave girl Liu, Lord Chancellor Ping, Majordomo Pong, head chef of the Imperial kitchen Pong, a Mandarin, The Prince of Persia and the executioner. The instrumentation used in the opera includes woodwinds, brass, keyboards, strings and percussion.

The opera consist of three acts and it was first of all presented by Giacomo Puccini. Unfortunately, the play could not be finished for presentation till Puccini's death and then it was Franco Alfano who finished the play. It was in 1926 that the play was first of all conducted in Milan at Teatro Alla Scala by Arturo Toscanini. But the music in the play was all by Puccini. The Turandot with the music of Alfano was later conducted by Ettore Panizza. Turandot spread to Rome, Buenos Aires, Dresden, Venice, Vienna, Berlin, New York, Brussels, Naples, Parma, Turin, London, San Francisco, Bologna, Paris and Moscow soon after its release in Milan.

The story of Turandot is about a cruel princess, Turandot, who avenges her grandmother's murder by a foreign prince by asking three difficult riddles form anyone who wants to marry the princess and then orders for beheading of that person if he fails to answer correctly. Prince of Tartary proves to be the prince who answered all the three riddles correctly. At that the princess is furious and begs her father not to let her at the mercy of the prince but the emperor sticks to the oath and then the Prince of Tartary teaches the Turandot the meaning of true love, which she learns but after much wrath and beheadings. The play has a happy ending which can leave the audience loving it. The story is basically about teaching love to a cruel princess and about sincerity and faith. We can always see an Asian touch to the play mixed with Italian, making it an awesome piece.

Turandot will be played all this year and in some time of next year also at different dates so that no one misses out the fun held in this opera. It will be held in New York in Metropolitan Opera and in London in London Coliseum.
