Founded in 1919 Los Angeles Philharmonic or LA Phil has time and again been lauded for its "forward thinking". Its contemporary approach towards music is what sets it apart from other orchestra as it does not dwell on recreating history. William Andrews Clark Jr was the founding member of the orchestra who chose Henry Rothwell as its first music director. Eleven days after the rehearsal, LA Phil's first concert saw light of the day in its founding year. However post Rothwell's death George Schneevoigt and Artur Rodinzki took over as music directors in 1920s.

In 1933, Otto Kleperer took charge of the orchestra. During his leadership many premieres were seen. Hence putting forth new works by Igor Stravinsky and Arnold Schoenberg. However things took a U turn when Clark died leaving the orchestra in a precarious situation. As the financial constraints took toll on the popularity of LA Phil Harvey Mudd came to the rescue.

Moreover the concerts at the Hollywood Bowl were also useful in keeping the orchestra afloat. Thus, Harvey Mudd helped the orchestra in getting through the Great Depression. He then appointed Alfred Wallenstein to lead LA Phil. Wallenstein also turned out to be a helping hand in taking the popularity up a notch. He was credited with many concerts at the Hollywood Bowl. The recordings with Angelenos, Arthur Rubinstein and Jascha Heifetz are counted among his most popular works. When Dorothy Buffum Chandler became the leader of the board of directors in 1950s she wanted to give a new dimension to the orchestra. As a result selecting Eduard van Beinum in hopes of strengthening the orchestra's position. Choosing the Concertgebouw Orchestra's principal conductor was indeed a step in the right direction as everyone from the orchestra's management to the musicians and the audiences loved him. After Eduard van Beinum's death in 1959 Georg Solta joined the orchestra as the music director in 1960.

The orchestra had high expectations of him as he had proved his mettle as a guest conductor in the past. However things turned sour when Solti resigned in 1961 when Zubin Mehta was brought into the picture as the assistant director without his consultation. Later in 1969 Ernest Fleischmenn's tenure began. With his avant-garde approach towards music, the orchestra took a big leap forward. Los Angeles Philharmonic Chamber Society and Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group came into existence under his leadership. Bringing to the fore one-of-a-kind concerts, they consequently led the way as they were imitated by other orchestras.

Carlo Maria Giulini began his tenure as music director in late 1970s. After Carlo's short career Andre Previn stepped in his shoes. His contributions to LA Phil had a great impact on the growth of the orchestra. Bringing in conductors like Kurt Sanderling, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Simon Rattle paved the way for USA, Asia and Europe tours. Consequently representing the orchestra at Salzburg Festival, Lucerne Festival (Switzerland), Stravinsky Festival and The Proms in London. At present Gustavo Dudamel continues to work incessantly to work for the betterment of the orchestra.
