Patina Rena Miller is an American actress and singer from South Carolina. Born in November of 1984 in South Carolina, Patina Miller attended the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts & Humanities. She was taught singing at a very early age. Often at weekends, she used to sing choir at a local church. She graduated in music theatre from Carnegie Mellon University.
Patina Miller played the role of Effie White in Dreamgirls. In 2007, she was offered a role in All My Children. In addition, she performed in Hair during the summer of 2008 and later, she managed to get the role of Delores Van Cartier in The Sister Act. With this,she rose to new heights of fame and popularity. The musical was released in 2009 and received mix reviews about her performance in the play. The Times termed her voice terrific and added that she would have been better, had she been a little more humorous.The Sister Act was produced by The West End productions.
Patina Miller won the whatsonstage.com Theatregoers Choice Award for Best Actress for her role in The Sister Act. She was also nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical. She went on to cast in the Broadway production of the play in March, 2011.The musical was released the same year and due to her remarkable performance, Miller won the Theatre World Award and was nominated for the Drama League Award for Distinguished Performance, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical, the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical and the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
She performed as Linda in Lost in the Stars, produced by City Center Encores. From December 2012 to December 2013, she performed in Pippin, which was produced by American Repertory Theater. She adopted a special routine to fit into the role she was given in Pippin. She paid great attention to her diet and joined the Mark Fisher Fitness in Manhattan for weight-lifting and balancing her body perfectly well.
Patina Miller won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical and Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, for her performance in Pippin. In addition, she was nominated for the Drama League Award for Distinguished Performance and the Fred and Adele Astaire Awards for Outstanding female Dancer in a Broadway Show.
During an interview, Miller thanked her teachers and supporters who helped her materialize her dreams. In September 2013, Miller was cast to play the role of Commander Paylor in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay.
Besides being a wonderful actress, Miller is also a singer and has released various successful albums including Pippin Broadway Revival Cast Recording, Out of Our Heads, What I Wanna Be When I Grow Up and Sister Act the Musical London Cast Recording to date. The Pippin Broadway Revival Cast Recording was the latest, which was released in 2013.
One of her recent concerts at the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theatre was a big success. The concert was part of the Barbara Cook's Spotlight series and she performed exceptionally well in the show. She sang the Ebb and Kander's Sing Happy. Currently, Mark Vanderpoel (bass expert), James Sampliner (music director), Rich Mercurio (drummer) and John Benthal (guitarist) are members of her band. John played in the Sister Act as well and the musical vibes that emanated from the Sampliner's innovative arrangements were a perfect match to the groove.
