What is more Latin than Latin music! It's the epitome of what America loves about Latin culture. According to Alex Walsh, vice president of market research at the Recording Industry Association of America, Latin music sales between 1997 and 1999 in the United States increased almost 30 percent -- from $490.6 million in 1997 to $626.7 million in 1999.

Honoring Spanish- and Portuguese-language music from around the globe, Latin Grammy Awards is an annual event where awards are given to recognize both artistic and technical brilliance and highlight the cultural diversity in the world of Latin music recording.These are chosen through a four-stage process: entering, screening, first round voting/nominating and final voting.

These are awarded by the Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (the Latin Recording Academy) which was set up to protect and support the many different regional forms of Latin music around the world.

It continues its sixth year of building up its successful Latin Grammy Street Parties brand, bringing the music and brand to the top U.S. Hispanic markets such as Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami and New York.

Its work also includes education programmes in the United States and Latin American countries. The academy seeks to consider all styles and genres that make up Latin music today; new categories are added and old categories are dropped as the industry changes.

A wide range of musicians, producers, engineers, and other professionals in the industry comprise the 4,000 academy members.These members vote on over 40 award categories, which include Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist.

The first Latin Grammy Awards were made in 2000. The inaugural ceremony took place in September 13 at Staples Center in Los Angeles. CBS broadcasted the show live and were seen by 7.5 million U.S. viewers.

The show was co hosted by Gloria Estefan, Andy Garcia, Jennifer Lopez and actor Jimmy Smits.The musicians who performed on stage included Gloria Estefan, Lopez, and a duet by 'N Sync with the Puerto Rican salsa band Son By Four.

The academy's 3,000 members determined the nominations, which incorporate a diverse genres, including pop, rock, salsa, tropical, tejano, norteno, tango, jazz, classical, merengue, and flamenco.

The nominees included acts as Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony and Carlos Santana --- Santana won eight Grammys earlier that year for his multiplatinum album "Supernatural."

The second awards ceremony, scheduled to take place on September 11, 2001, was cancelled because of the terrorist events in the United States that day, and the winners were simply announced.

The cancellation came as buildings around the Los Angeles area were being closed or evacuated as a precaution. Ironically, the Latin Grammys, originally scheduled to be broadcast from Miami, were moved to L.A. last month as a security precaution.

Scheduled performers at the event included guitarist Carlos Santana and an all-star lineup of presenters including Arnold Schwarzenegger and Latin jazz musician Arturo Sandoval.

In 2004 award-winning producer and songwriter Kike Santander was elected chairman of the board of the Latin Recording Academy and became the group?s second chairman, replacing Manolo Diaz.

7th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards were broadcasted live in Nov. 2, 2006, from Madison Square Garden on the Univision Television Network, marking the first time New York hosted the international showcase of Latin music.

In 2005, the Latin GRAMMY Awards aired for the first time on Univision ? and for the first time entirely in Spanish ? to explosive ratings.Delivering nine million total viewers, the program was the most-watched Latin Grammy telecast ever among young adults, nearly two million more than the previous telecast in English.

Las Vegas, Navada was the host city for the 8th Annual Latin Grammy Awards in 2007. The night?s big winner was the Spanish musician, Juan Luis Guerra with 5 Awards including Album of the Year.

To date, Alejandro Sanz has the most awards with 15 (1 Regular Grammy Award and 14 Latin Grammy Awards) and has sold more than 21 million albums worldwide. In 2003, he recorded the album No Es Lo Mismo, which won four 2004 Latin Grammy Awards.

It won Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year, and Best Engineered Album with Mick Guzauski, Pepo Sherman, and Rafa Sardina as engineers.

This year on November 13, the 9th Annual Latin Grammy Awards are scheduled to take place in Houston, Texas at the Toyota Center featuring 49 categories.

The evening prior to the telecast, The Latin Recording Academy will honor Cuban-American superstar Gloria Estefan as the 2008 Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year in recognition of her professional, musical and social accomplishments.

She is the first woman to be honored with the Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year tribute. Among the female artists to win the most Grammy Awards is Shakira with 7 Latin Grammys.
