Killswitch Engage is a metalcore band that shaped after the bands Overcast and Aftershock, both metalcore, disbanded. Originally, there were four band members: Joel Stroetzel (guitarist), Jesse Leach (vocalist), Mike D'Antonio (bassist) and Adam Dutkiewicz (drummer); whereas, currently, the band consists of five members, where Howard Jones has taken over the position of the lead vocalist, replacing Jesse Leach and Justin Foley has also been added as another drummer.

The name 'Killswitch Engage' was proposed by D'Antonio, who had gotten inspired by an episode of the FOX television program The X-Files entitled "Kill Switch", written by William Gibson. Gibson had originally named this episode for industrial band Kill Switch...Klick. Kill Switch means to turn everything off, whereas, engage refers to turning it on again. By suggesting this name, D'Antonio implied to start all over again.

Killwitch Engage, also known as KsE in short, formed in 1999, in Westfield, Massachusetts. It was right after the two metalcore bands - Overcast and Aftershock split up in 1998. Releasing its self-titled debut album in the year 2000, Killswitch Engage, till date, has released five albums. The band did not get much financial success with its first two albums. However, with the release of the band's third studio album - The End of Heartache, in 2004, it broke into fame and fortune. The album went gold, and its title track got nominated for the Grammy's. Additional, the album got acclaimed by Rolling Stone's Jon Caramanica, who called it a "stunning collection, retaining much of their signature musical brutality".

After the release of the band's sophomore effort - Alive or Just Breathing (2002) and the 2004's hit The End of Heartache, Killswitch Engage had found a balance between the frantic loud sound of nu-metal and the catchy introverted sound of emo-core. Thus, the following albums - As Daylight Dies (2006) and Killswitch Engage (2009), another self-titled album of the band, also scored well on the Billboards.

Other than releasing studio albums, Killswitch Engage also tours a lot and has earned a strong fan following from different parts of the world. Currently, the band is all set to hit the road for a winter tour of the US, in support of its last summer's self-titled release.
